Suggestions for dvd burner

I'm building a comp for someone and he needs a dvd burner. I really don't know much about dvd burners and would like some insight. What is the difference between DVD+R and DVD-RW and DVD + and - R? Is 2x ok speed to get or should I go for 4x? Also, which dvd burner is the best to get for around $120 to $160? Thanks.

right now + & - is really just a format war. -R media is supposed to have better support in home theater dvd players, the media is about the same cost. Ive seen some good deals for 2.4x +R burners in the $100 range. thisthread talks about a nice deal on a burner with links to dvd help guides, etc.

also in the FS/FT forum ive seen some 4x burners for under $150

Is it ok to go ahead with a +R drive or get both a + and - drive.

thats up to you, or your friend. Like i was saying, you can get a single format drive for pretty cheap $100-$120, or go with dual for around $180. Personally i would get the dual, unless its just for backing up data, then id get the cheapest 2.4x you could find..

Places seem to be moving away from DVD-R/RW.
I am under the impression that DVD-R/RW was first, but +R/RW came around because some companies didn't want to conform, or pay loyalties or something like that. Anyone care to provide more insights on this, or corrections?

Anyway, dual-format drives are coming down in price. I bought a Toshiba SD-R5002 drive a few months ago for $200 - DVD-R/RW drive. Now, dual format drives are already approaching this price, if not falling below it.

What is a good dvd burning software? Is lite-on 4x dvd+r/rw burning software good or should I go with nero? I believe lite-on software is called MyDVD or something. I'm leaning more toward this drive because it has the fastest cd-r burning speed, 40x, rather than 16x of the nec drive with nero xpress software. Will DVD-Shrink work with the MyDVD software?

Nero6 seems to be working fine with my Pioneer DVD-RW and you might want to check on prices for the Pioneer A06 which burns both - and + DVD

I have had the Pioneer 103,104 and 105, the Cendyne (105), the Cendyne (NEC1100a and 1300a) and the HP300i (NEC1100a). All have worked perfectly. I have always used Nero and DVdDecrytor and have produced perfect dvd's. ALso have used CCE-DVD2One-DVDSplit etc, again, all have worked as advertised. All of my produced dvds whether they be + or - have worked in my 6 players without a hiccup. Those being Sony-Panasonic-Apex-Pioneer and Toshiba.

My only gripe is that media that is -r that is advertised to work at 4x, won't always work at those speeds but +r that is advertised at 2.4x or 4x speeds will always work at those speeds in a +r burner. I am down to the HP and the NEC1300a (although I don't purchase -r dvd's anymore)

What ever choice you make is the right one. Enjoy yourself.

After using a Pioneer 105 for some time, I just got an Optprite 0203 dual +- 4X for $153 and it works great. It is actually a Sanyo unit and also does HD Burn on CD's (Puts 1.4GB on 700mb media) Really pleased with it.

If u can wait this the end of the mont the new Plextor 8X multiformat DVD burner will be out. Newegg.com is currently listing it for $260 plus $5 s&h

This is the burner that I plan to purchase, as it will also burner CDR at 40x

newegg also has the liteon dual format 4x burner. it's $150 shipped. cheap. and burns cds at 40x. this is the burner in naruto's budget.

DVD+RW for data: use incd
DVD-R for movies: use dvd authoring software
DVD+R for movies and data: use nero for data, dvd authoring software for movies
DVD-RW, i have no idea why this is even here.
