I was thinking about integrating my fish tank into my computer. Wondering if anyone else has done this. If so, can ya send me some pics so I get an idea.

On the more saner side, does anyone know a general local place where I can get my metal case modded for a cheap price. Say for example, Home Depot or some hardware store of some sort?

Dont forget the fish tank.

Never seen a fish tank case. I've seen quite a few pics of old MAC Systems that were converted to fishtanks. (The old ones with the cpu and monitor in one case... like the IMACs).

Negatives:

Where would you put the tank (even if you used custom panels) there's not a lot of open area. Maybe you could put a small siamese fighting fish / tank in there... but

The case isn't usually in a place where you can get a good view of the fish. Mine is usually besides a desk or underneath.

The heat from the system running would keep your fish a little hot. IIRC, tropical fish don't like water over 80-85deg F. My 10g tanks used to get that hot sitting outside with florescent lighting and ambient room temperatures around 78. A smaller tank would be more sensative to temperature changes.

All in all, sounds cool but I think it would have more engineering problems than just fitting it into your case.

Good luck.

Okay, maybe that wont work then. :( Sorry fishies

How about integrating a subwoofer into the case then. I can have a giant blow hole that when the speaker is thumpin, It pushes out the hot air and makes music at theh same time. :)

The Subwoofer idea could cause major problems. The magnet on the back of the woofer could destroy all the data on the hard drive.
(If you used a small speaker (4" to 6") you might be ok, but...I don't know where the limit is.)

Now I am not condoning this [poor fishies] but if you could get the grounding problem out of the way... A regular case would fit into a 10g tank which in turn would fit into a larger tank. If you look at a tank, silicone is used to hold it together [no, not the pretty outside plastic strips] so you could take apart a 10g tank and 'build' a computer into it. Again, taking grounding into consideration. All that's left after that is making sure it is waterproof [as with all custom built fish tanks] and sealing it into the larger tank. You would want to make sure that the smaller is towards the top [hiding for the fishes underneath :)] and that it is properly sealed to the larger tank. Maybe build a custom cover and have the computer stick up a bit with the cd rom/floppy poking out the side w/the power button etc. and the cover only covering the water. Condensation would be an issue, but I don't think that heat would. You wouldn't need a heater in the large tank though, and would want to keep a constant eye on the fish. Once this is done however, it is PERMANENT! Ever tried to re-locate fish? Sucky sucky.

That sounds feasable.
Need to have some ducts for air flow too.
If you had the right tools you could get really creative.
:D
