as a result of going to hawaii, i can say that i love clean looking beaches with clear blue water...

I don't plan to go in a group, just me and my SO.

however i love food, and i'm definitely going to make a lil trek around europe (visit italy, france, etc) and thailand

so places that seem interesting are
italy
thailand
costa rica (or any other tropical place, cabo mexico, although i'm weary of our safety)
bali
hawaii again (maybe a different island)

just curious to see what suggestions you guys have for vacations...

places that don't sound interesting to me at all are areas that don't sound like they're much different than what we have here in the US with big cities and too many people... ie

australia
england
japan (i guess i can try the sushi when i get there and look at anime)
china

I liked Maui so much I moved here.

I don't know what your budget is, but if you have 2-3 weeks I'd suggest hitting Maui, Hawaii & Kauai. Lanai is nice for a couple of nights of pure quiet. Just go island hopping. If you've never been off Oahu you've never been to Hawaii.

How about a cruise up the coast to alaska?

You like food? Food is included.

I think there might be some cruises across the pacific to the asian rim too.

Since visiting French Polynesia, I always make sure to mention it. Blows Hawaii aways scenery wise, but it's much quieter and expensive. If you want to go some place colder, I would suggest Norway or Iceland.

Come back to Hawaii. Spend your money here! The more you spend the less our taxes go up next year! Hooray! We  you!

If your worried about your safety in the Caribbean going on a cruise gives you a nice lifeline. I like the Southern Caribbean the best, San Juan/Aruba/Curacao/St. Maarten/ St. Thomas. Although, they do East and West Caribbean departures from New Orleans and you could soak up a little Cajun atmosphere for a week before you left.

BTW-If you like food I gained 18 lbs. in 7 days the last time I went.

As you mentioned too many people, you sound like me - I want my vacations to be at nice quiet peaceful places.

Here's where I've wanted to go for a few years: St John (US Virgin Islands)

here
I've never heard a negative word spoken about St John, except that at certain times of the year, make sure you brought bug spray.
Plenty of restaurants, plenty of beaches, the only thing it lacks is the crowds.

Oh, and based on the first line you wrote in the OP, read this page:

Maui, Waikiki Beach - Hawaii
You could also check out the Big Island if your into hiking. Some decent trails that run through old volcanic craters.

Anegada in the British Virgin Islands is great. It's kind of a remote island, so there are virtually no crowds. The water is amazing and the local cuisine is great. It's kind of expensive to get there however.
Virgin Gorda (BVI) is also nice. I wasn't a big fan of Tortola or St. Thomas (too many people).

best way to get a 2-3 week vacation is to start a thread involving treadmills and planes

Ooops, misread the OP ;)
