Suggestion to help the peasants

I do not know if this has been brought up previously, and if so I apologize, but is it possible to limit forum veiwing to only those that are logged in? Surely that would cut down on bandwidth usage at least somewhat and help those of us out who are too poor and/or stingy to subscribe. I'm not meaning to gripe, but the forums have been absolutely awful the past couple of days.

If you limited the viewing only to members that are logged in then you would have some people who would never sign up because they don't even know what AT is all about.

One thing I don't understand is how AT expects to grow. You can't expect new members to subscribe right away because they don't know if they are going to like it here and they aren't going to stick around because it's so unbearbly slow for the non-subscribers.

Considering the fact that the forums lose money, why would he want them to grow? As they have grown over the past couple of years, the loss has simply gotten higher and higher as costs go up, and ad revenues go down.

my question is how do you know how slow it is if you weren't hear when it was fast on the non-subscriber line. i mean i didn't really think it was bad when i first lurked. cause i was just looking around. i posted a few times and a little more and then i realized that it was a little slow. so i subscribed and now love it. maybe limiting certain forums to just those logged in? i dunno. i'm fine with it the way it is..

do they have 85K registered users? on top of that, I dont recall every seeing mainstream media exposure of them. I see AT quite a bit, anand's even got a mag. column.

<< So why are the Hardforums so much faster, and free too? Are they losing even MORE money? >>

Have you noticed how they seem to go down about once a week? Also figure in the fact that they have about 1/3 the users.

Personally I think thats a pretty poor idea. What if you are logging in from another computer and forgot the pass? You'd at least want to be able to see whats happening. And what about people who are new (as was mentioned above to the forums? I doubt that very much bandwidth is being taken up by people who aren't logged in anyway, most people want to respond if they spend any time at all reading here, and they need to be logged in to respond. Perhaps someone can respond with the real stats, but I'm guessing 10% or less of the people who browse the forums arent' logged in. As for speed, really, why would anand have any reason to get more bandwidth for non subscribers? It encourages people to sign up for better bandwidth/speed, which means more money for the anand forums (which apparently are losing money, or at the very least, breaking even). 🙂

My solution has been to go through the forum index and open threads in a new window. They you don't have to reload pages all the time. So far its working great. I think it is very hard to support any "user forum" when it grows as big as AT has, but it is an integral part of the "AT XPerience". I think the forums are at a "critical mass" point where there are enough users here to sustain it. Growth is still wildly possible but not really that important to what goes on here. If anyone wants to voice their opinion or get help or speek out or ... etc at the largest(?) internet forum. They have to come here.

and...... 21000 posts?!?!?!? DAMN!

A great suggestion for the non-subscribers, good call.

Amen.

Hopefully, the subscriber base is helping to bandage the festering wound that is the forum. 😉

That's what I've been doing for some time now, and it's a workable solution for someone like me who can't afford to subscribe.
