First off, 60 minutes, not 48 (4 15 minute quarters). Second, no. Clock management is an integral strategy late in games. It's why late drives have to rely on passing the ball and getting out of bounds; plays that can stop the clock and save timeouts. If you kept the clock running constantly, many games would be decided by the start of the 4th quarter, and late game drives would become impossible. It takes away a strategic component, and makes the game less compelling for people who understand why those strategic options are important.
It's fine to not like football; you don't want to watch it, no one's forcing you (I hope). But coming in as a non-fan with suggestions for how it could be improved when it's already the most popular sport in America? That's ridiculous and it makes you come across as unbelievably arrogant. We don't need you to fix football for us. Go watch soccer, or Iron Chef, or whatever it is that non-sports people like (disclaimer, I like both soccer and Iron Chef).
Just my two cents, mind you.
Got roped into watching a football game. The singular thought I had for 3 hours was the game was only supposed to be 48 minutes long. Stop stopping the dang clock. Let it roll.
/not a sports person.
Now you see why real Football (aka Soccer) is not popular in this country.
Companies HATE it cause there is no commercials and they even convinced the public that it sucks.
Then you have people that say "it's boring" while they spend 75% of their time watchin shitty commercials and 25% watching baseball....golf......or fake rugby.
Meanwhile around the world it's still the most popular sport around...
Personally I love all the sports. Although football "aka soccer" is my #1, I do enjoy watching Basketball, Baseball, Football and just about anything else.
I can't watch soccer because of the possibility of 0-0 games. Nothing makes me feel like I wasted 90 minutes of my life more than a 0-0 soccer game.
Why watch sports at all if you are not interested in the process? Just subscribe to score alert then.
I am very interested in the process... as long as it actually progresses towards something. 0-0 games are not my idea of a process.
its still 48 minutes in college, right?
Football is like good coffee. Its not for everyone. Some people prefer something quick and easy (basketball) or slow and steady (baseball). Clock management is one of the really great things about football. I have witnessed many teams lose a tight game because they scored too fast but many more games where a team just ran out of time.
Football is a lot like full contact chess. That reminds me...you know what sport needs to be full contact? Golf. Make that shit full contact and I'll watch it every time its on.
I hate how NHL caved to Americans and got rid of the tie game. I really don't understand why you guys can't handle a tie.
Don't worry, soon football will be obsolete due to head injuries (CTE) and it will turn into a pussified game of flag football in the next 10 years. You're not missing much, just like boxing.

I guess we like to have clear winners and losers in competition? At least I know I do. The tie is only half it. I can get over a 5-5 tie game, it's the games in which literally no points are scored that kill me.
Another thing with soccer is standings being determined by stats other than wins and losses. For example, two teams have identical records at the end of a season, but Team A advances because in that one game 3 weeks ago they scored 3 goals while Team B only scored 2, so Team A had more goals at the end.![]()

Not sure how relavent, but it's awesome nonetheless (credit to the late George Carlin):
Baseball is different from any other sport, very different. For instance, in most sports you score points or goals; in baseball you score runs. In most sports the ball, or object, is put in play by the offensive team; in baseball the defensive team puts the ball in play, and only the defense is allowed to touch the ball. In fact, in baseball if an offensive player touches the ball intentionally, he's out; sometimes unintentionally, he's out.

Also: in football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and all sports played with a ball, you score with the ball and in baseball the ball prevents you from scoring.
In most sports the team is run by a coach; in baseball the team is run by a manager. And only in baseball does the manager or coach wear the same clothing the players do. If you'd ever seen John Madden in his Oakland Raiders uniform, you'd know the reason for this custom.

Now, I've mentioned football. Baseball & football are the two most popular spectator sports in this country. And as such, it seems they ought to be able to tell us something about ourselves and our values.

I enjoy comparing baseball and football:
Baseball is a nineteenth-century pastoral game.
Football is a twentieth-century technological struggle.

Baseball is played on a diamond, in a park. The baseball park!
Football is played on a gridiron, in a stadium, sometimes called Soldier Field or War
Memorial Stadium.

Baseball begins in the spring, the season of new life.
Football begins in the fall, when everything's dying.

In football you wear a helmet.
In baseball you wear a cap.

Football is concerned with downs - what down is it?
Baseball is concerned with ups - who's up?

In football you receive a penalty.
In baseball you make an error.

In football the specialist comes in to kick.
In baseball the specialist comes in to relieve somebody.

Football has hitting, clipping, spearing, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting and unnecessary roughness.
Baseball has the sacrifice.

Football is played in any kind of weather: rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog...
In baseball, if it rains, we don't go out to play.

Baseball has the seventh inning stretch.
Football has the two minute warning.

Baseball has no time limit: we don't know when it's gonna end - might have extra innings.
Football is rigidly timed, and it will end even if we've got to go to sudden death.

In baseball, during the game, in the stands, there's kind of a picnic feeling; emotions may run high or low, but there's not too much unpleasantness.
In football, during the game in the stands, you can be sure that at least twenty-seven times you're capable of taking the life of a fellow human being.

And finally, the objectives of the two games are completely different:

In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! - I hope I'll be safe at home!
That post is so full of dumb I have to get a new cup of coffee.
I am very interested in the process... as long as it actually progresses towards something. 0-0 games are not my idea of a process.
The timing difference is between basketball (college) and that thing they do in the NBA. (8 minutes)
