I would spread a very thin layer over both the heat spreader AND the heatsink contact face. Arctic Silver says that you are supposed to rub the paste into the surface so that the micronized silver particles can get into the surface imperfections and help with heat transfer.

Then you want to mount it and make sure that the retention mechanism is exerting enough force to squish out as much of the paste as possible (so that there is as close a contact between the heat spreader and the heatsink).

So I should first clean it off with isopropanol or something similar? On the website it says that you only need to prime the heat sink for earlier versions of arctice silver but it seems like it still would help.

Sorry to keep bringing this back but I tried your suggestion. I cleaned off everything with isopropanol and put some on the heatsink and then wiped it off and then applied it to the heat spreader. When I do a burn in with my computer now it stays between 51-52 C. I know the temperature is supposed to go down 5 degrees over time but that still seems high. What am I doing wrong? Also I feel the heat sink on the bios chip on the motherboard and it runs so hot that it is painful to touch. Is that normal?

Hmm... Intel actually sells the thermal pad for use with their superhot P4 CPUs... HERE. Costs only $1 per pad.

Maybe you want to try that, seeing as how you had such good luck with a thermal pad previously and no luck at all with the Arctic Silver.

And it is indeed a good idea to have some airflow over the northbridge heatsink to help keep them cool.

Will this thermal pad work with mine since it is amd? Should i consider a different heatsink besides the stock?

I think if that stuff can keep a P4 PresHott juuuuust cool enough for it to work what with the dinky Intel stock heatsinks, it should work with a cooler-running AMD chip.. Heck, it's only $1.

Well I installed it and my immediate reaction isn't too good. When I stress it out it will hop between 52-53 C which is about 1C hotter than it did before. How long does it take for this pad to break in? Should i ditch it and go back to the arctic silver and live with it? Or is there something else I could do/try to improve this. I'm definitely getting jealous of all these people who get cpu temps 40-50 C. I do notice that the heat sink is pretty warm and the metal in the case even gets warm after about 30 minutes. I just can't imagine what changed so much from before.... Thank you so much for your help
