Most of us here envy California servers and their pay... but also realize their COL is MUCH higher than ours.

I knew a white guy that didn't tip at all. I asked him about it and he said they need to get a better job. Which was kinda funny cause he was working a security job.

They make more then most recent college graduates in California. In California a server makes enough to support a family.

Why shouldn't they be able to support a family? Its a hard job. Especially in a state like Cali where most people think their shit doesn't stink.

federal law says that on the end paycheck if your employee doesnt meet min wage standards for the month then you have to pay difference. A
Alot of states pay under $3 to servers. In AZ (where the restaurant was) I tipped 20% for good service less as it went down.
Here in CA I tip 10% because they make the state min wage (8.25 or something)
anyway back on topic. We would print on the receipts that for parties of 6 or more we auto add 18% and people would get pissed. But we found that w/out that those same people tipped way under that.
We never added it to person receipts but I have seen where they broke down the 10/15/20% and I liked it.

Lol no you shouldn't be able to support a family for a customer service job. It's not hard hard job just fast paced. You have to deal with shitty people in all customer service jobs. I feel that a janitor should be payed more than a server because they do customer service that not many people want to do.
I don't see a problem with the comments on the bill. It's clearly marked "Suggested Gratuity" with an asterisk, along with the comment underneath. When the waiter comes back with the receipt, you should be able to write in your desired amount on the Tip line.
It's not like the printed bill is set in stone. It simply indicates what is suggested for a typical party of 6.
If you really have an issue with it, ask the waiter about it. I'm sure they'd have no problem answering your questions.

People in customer service jobs should absolutely be able to support their families. I've had CS positions in the past & I worked my a** off. I earned every cent & was always underpaid. It's nonsense to think folks who deal with constant BS every day shouldn't be well paid.
CS folks make a huge contribution to customer retention, which leads to repeat business, and the company's bottom line. Hell, you could almost say CS people are a part of the sales team in a company, just based on customer retention alone. In a restaurant environment, the waiters are the CS & sales person.

I've delivered pizza and Chinese food. Damn fucking skippy the known cheapskates customers got shittier service. With the pizza I would sometimes punch the top of the box so the cheese stuck to the inside. Its not likely anybody is going to remember you tipped 15% instead of 18%. It's the folks that give no tip, or maybe $1 on a $40 order. I've heard of waitresses changing the tip on CC receipts after they're signed before, now that is shady.

not my standard. I work too hard for my money to give big tips. 15% of the pre-tax amount standard, if service was awesome, 15% of the post-tax amount.
Not my problem that the waiters are low paid, I'm not forcing them to work there.

I tip pizza/chinese food guys a minimum of 25%. I was both a waiter and a delivery driver in the past. I'd rather do the waiting job.
Then your employer was doing something illegal, unless you are OLD. But this has been the law since 1975.
Its been popping up more lately. Probably because people can't do the math in their head anymore...

While I usually tip about 20%, I really don't understand why we tip so much. If waiters were paid normal rates, I would guess that they would make a tiny bit more than minimum wage. That's like... a few dollars in tip from each table, which is way less than we all tip.
