Suggest some smooth/slow jazz/blues for me

I'm trying to find some compilations or artist that are smooth/slow jazz/blues but don't know where to begin really.

I really like John Mayer's slowed down mostly instrumental songs he has on some albums and am looking for something that's maybe a artist or compilation of artist that consist of something like that.

Something that can just play in the background and not be distracting.

"Smooth Jazz" = Kenny G. something you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy.

What I think you want is something along the lines of Miles Davis, or Coltrane's "Love Supreme."

Start with Kind of Blue and Love Supreme, go from there.

Well I did check out Miles Davis but am not a fan of horns in this kind of music, more enjoy guitar strumming and piano.

Still looking into Coltrane though...

Thanks for the suggestions.

Check out Chris Botti. He's a trumpet player....I've got 2 of his albums and listen to them at work when I need to kill some stress. It goes good with Maker's Mark or Scotch too...

First Album I got was called "Midnight Without You"....named for the only song on the album with lyrics. Alone in the City is a really good track, as well as the Steps of Positano and others. It prompted me to get another album, "When I Fall in Love" which had more well-known songs. My only gripe is that he has a version of Ordinary Love (old Sade song) that has piercing high muted high notes for the chorus on the trumpet. I basically reburned the CD without that song and it improved the album greatly. I like iTunes because you can just uncheck the sucky tracks. 😛

I was going to suggest Diana Krall (noticed someone else did). I like the music she sings, but I'm not a big fan of her voice. While she's definitely decent looking and has a good voice, her accent and pronunciation of certain things makes it so I can only handle so many tracks. Whereas with the instrumental stuff, I can listen to it for much longer.

The REAL Jazz singer is Nat King Cole. He has the voice, the proper voice accent and pronunciation in his words to make you believe he means what he's singing. Aside from him, you know Ella Fitzgerald is the other serious jazz singer....and she knows how to tear it up.

Here's a cover of the Nat King Cole style....

Now....for something else, I HIGHLY recommend checking into Stephane Grapelli. He is a jazz violinist. He got me hooked on that style and it's more upbeat than the slower mellow stuff. He's just very gifted. Be sure to give him more than one listen. He played for many years and some tracks available are definitely better than others....but many will be faster tempo than what you're looking for.

Here's an example of his stuff...

So you just want instrumentals?

If not, for some smooth, slow, jazzy blues I like Joss Stone.

Don't sleep on Norman Brown. The guy is very good.

Joe Bonamassa is another artist that you could just have playing in the background, but he sings through half of his songs.

Oscar Peterson - purely piano jazz, really good if you like piano.

Incendio - purely guitar jazz, really good if you like guitar. Mostly latin.

Wes Montgomery - this guy redefined jazz guitar! He played in all sorts of bands, so you'll find SOMETHING that you'll like. Mostly swing.

If you wanna talk jazz, PM me some time. I studied jazz for a couple years and I've been playing it for maybe 4-5 years. I'm a fanatic.

You need to go back a little. Art Tatum. Start there. Once you're mesmerized, post a new thread and I'll give you another name.

Art Tatum.

Now.

Do not read any other posts.

Diana Krall, Nat King Cole, Stan Getz (altho if you don't like horns you may disregard this choice).
