I would really like to purchase a handgun but it's alot of hassle in the county I live in, which is just outside NYC. Lots of paperwork and a 6-month waiting period while applying for a license which must be renewed.

I'd like to get something now which I can keep in the house and take to a firing range occassionally and a rifle would be great, though I'd like something compact. Some of the tactical model AR15's (A3?) are really nice but really expensive! I'd say my budget is 6 to 8 hundred tops.

Got any suggestions?

hmm actually seems like BushMaster makes some nice AR15 models just about the max end of my budget.. I always think of Colt though when I think of AR15's...

what do you guys think of Bushmaster? Good quality ? I'm not going to go to the firing range with one and it jams on me after 5 shots will I ? :)

Just get a shotgun. It's very effective at protecting property, and you're not bound to miss a target at 3am half asleep and with slowed reflexes.

High powered rifles aren't very friendly for protection (it's an offensive weapon). They're more designed for hunting, not protecting life or property.

Yeah I was thinking about a shotgun and it would be nice but it doesn't seem to have the fear factor something like a AR15 might have. PLus going to the firing range with a shotgun is no fun :( I would like to go once a month to some of the 100-300 yard ranges. Shotgun would be somethign that just stays in the closet all the time

The best compact rifle for home defense and plinking at the range is the M1 carbine in my opinion. I love mine which is an original Winchester manufactured one from WWII. The only downside is the ammo can be a little pricey but you can reload it yourself. The gun is very accurate and becuase it has basically a pistol round it does not have the penetrating power to do great damage like a bigger caliber will if a bullet strays, not that any bullet is safe but there are differing degrees. The round has plenty of punch to kill the bad guy in your living room though. Plus the gun is light and easy to fire and keep on target.

I suggest the SU-16. Cheap, versatile, compact.

Hehe that's a pretty cool gun, I would buy that for camping trips in Alaska

Indeed. I saw one in a gun store. I was surprised at how light weight it is, and the fact that it folds up is awesome. Plus, out here in CA, the gun grabbers haven't classified it as an 'assault rifle,' even though it is semi-automatic. Their reasoning? It doesn't have a pistol grip.

I used to have a .22 rifle that was just a stock. you unscrew a cap and pull out the barrel and assembly and screw everything together. It was pretty cheap though...

This rifle is light years beyond that... such innovative designs like the biped that folds into the barrel and the magazine holder in the stock. I like it alot

If you are going to the range, get a .22
They punch holes in paper just fine out to 80 yards or so, and you can get 5,000 rounds of .22LR for the price of 1,000 rounds of .223.
For home defense, the shotgun has no equal, both in visual intimidation (a 12 guage looks big enough to swallow you whole when it is pointed at you:) ), and in effectiveness.
The added bonus of a shotgun is the fact that the pellets will not punch through a couple of walls and kill your neighbor. A .223 or any high velocity round can do that in FMJ.

For home defense you can get frangible ammunition. Although, I don't know if it comes in .223.

Sure you can. It still won't help you if you miss them by that much, when one third of the pellets from a shotgun might indeed hit the intended target with the same mistake in aiming.

Bushmater makes qualtiy guns. You will not be disapointed with a bushy AR-15. Its a blast to shoot, and fairly cheap too!

Fear factor = shotgun bar none. Any burglar that hears that infamous click clack of a 12 gauge shotgun loading will try and get out of the house in a hurry.

Oh, the fear of getting blasted with an over and under is enough to scare anyone. Bullets pierce through a body cleanly, a shotgun BLASTS through them (use a magnum load and see the canyon that'll produce!). If they live, they'd wished they died as they'll be horribly disfigured.

Go skeet shooting. It's a family sport as well, so the missus and kids can come along. It's more trying than straight target shooting, as the target is moving and you got to aim and shoot in advance. Besides, there's prizes at skeet events too (sometimes some very good ones!).

The only reason you should buy a gun is if you go hunting alot. Personal protection is a lame excuse. What are the chances some one will actually break in when your home, and are you really going to pull a gun on them? To many things can go wrong with that scenerio! Get a can of mace or a baseball bat. I know several people who got guns for "protection". One person shot his friend and killed him by accident showing his gun for protection off. One of the others had his house broke into and some one actually stole his gun. Anyway, I am all for the right to own a gun, just think this is a bad excuse to get one. Sorry if I offend anyone but it's just my opinion.

Hmm, so let's see. One of your friends obviously had no idea how to handle firearms, and your other friend obviously had no idea how to secure his firearms. I don't really know what that says about knowledgeable gun owners.

So if your friend was showing off his new nail gun to his friend and then shot and killed him, should everyone go back to hammer and nails?

A baseball bat would be the worst thing to use, you're weak from sleep and you cant swing that thing around in tight hallways or doorways. Mace is OK but very limited and pretty easy to defend against. A gun is the most effective solution.
