azazyel, those sound good, but once I've heard a comedy CD I can't listen to it again for a while and I'll be traveling for a couple of nights this weekend and then a few more next week. I just need a couple of CDs I can listen to over again each of those nights to keep me from nodding off on those long and winding roads. Thanks though, I'll keep them in mind for later.

UNESC0, I just don't get time to listen to the radio much. I have to get going on the first trip in a couple of hours. Maybe late tonight if I don't get back too late.

Ahh too bad, I can listen to Mitch all the time. Henry Rollins' spoken word is also really good. To me it just passes the time quicker than actual music. But for music I would recomend System Of A Down, Digable Planets, Heiroglyphics, Static-x, Beastie Boys (No Sleep Till Brooklyn!).

Or you can get some books on CD. Stephen King's Dark Tower series would be perfect and I just read Eragon by Christopher Paolini which is on CD and it was OK. It would probably be pretty good for drive because it's sort of a kid's fantasy book.

Speaking from experience, dance/hardcore music is a big no-no for staying up while driving.
The repetative nature of the music becomes almost background noise to my ears and my mind starts wandering. I should point out, however, that Trance & Breakbeat etc are probably my favourite types of music, but they're not so good for staying alert.

I had good results from Mike & The Mechanics' "Beggar On A Beach Of Gold" though. Dunno why, it's not exactly fast-paced.

For long drives I actually would recommend comedy CDs. Each CD is usually an hour or so. Pick up some Mitch Hedberg or Eddie Izzard.

i just watched a Mitch Hedberg clip on google video and it was the least funny thing ever. It was like he was trying to bomb, but but people kept laughing histarically. Maybe he just wanted to suck on letterman

I can't listen to books on CD at all. They completely bore me and fail to get my attention. I'd much rather read the book myself, but of course that's far less practical while driving.

The Cardigans have a new CD. It sounds nothing like their old stuff. Try Don't Blame Your Daughter (Diamonds) track, its really sad but extremely beautiful.

i recommend some MOS sessions, or linkin park.
something to pump you up to or dance in your chair.
so you wont sleep.

Sorry I haven't been replying, but I've been on the road or working for most of the weekend. I haven't had time to listen to any of the music suggested yet and probably won't until tomorrow evening, but I appreciate all of the suggestions and will follow up on them.

Xafgoat, I haven't heard of them but noted and will check it out. Thanks.

ncircle, know the song, but not really what I'm looking for. Thanks. 🙂

Lonyo, small town rural areas I'm traveling in really only have a couple of good radio stations that come in loud and clear. Not much choice when those aren't playing anything good. Thanks though.

electricJ, I'll give it a couple of listens then. 🙂 Thanks.

anxi80, wow, I've got to be able to find at least a few things from that list. I recognize a few of the artists so hopefully they're all of that genre. I'll listen to their samples tomorrow night. Thanks.

azazyel, I've never listened to books on tape or CD before. I just enjoy reading them so much that I figured listening to someone else read them wouldn't be as good. It might be a good way to get one of the books I haven't had time to read done though. Probably could hear a whole book in a couple of trips. I may give it a try. Thanks.

HamSupLo, don't know them, but will give it a listen. Thanks.

Phil, I'm just the opposite, that kind of music keeps me awake. I'm using tapping on the steering wheel or seat dancing while I listen to them. I like some Trance, but sometimes the repetitiveness of it can bore me after a while. I'll try the Mike and the Mechanics suggestion. Thanks.

DarkKnight69, I like George Carlin and have heard a lot of his older stuff. I might try some of the newer, but I think some upbeat music will serve my purposes better for this week. Thanks.

SampSon, don't know much about them except that they're kind of electronic heavy metal? I'll check them out. Thanks.

tami, sounds like the right idea, I'll sample some of their stuff and see what works. Thanks.

ironwing, nice taste in music there. I like Bob Dylan, maybe I'll be more likely to stay awake while I'm trying to figure out what he's saying. 🙂 I have Quadrophenia by The Who on vinyl somewhere. Maybe you're on to something there. I think I'll go through my old albums that I haven't listen to in a long time and find some stuff to download. Right now I'm thinking "Brain Salad Surgery" by Emerson Lake and Palmer among others. I like black gospel music, but don't know enough about the artists to know who to sample. I've heard a lot of Willie's stuff, but except for a few things, he just doesn't do it for me. Thanks for the help.

nakedfrog, that's what I've always thought when it comes to audio books, but I may give one a try. Sure would pass the time if you could read one while driving though. 😛

Byte, hmmm I like some of The Cardigans old stuff so I don't know, but I'll give the one you suggested a try and maybe go back and listen to some of the old stuff I liked. That reminds me to look for some of No Doubt's old stuff. Thanks.

kindest, is that Mos Def you're talking about? I've liked some of the Linkin' Park stuff in the past, I'll give some of their newer stuff a try. The dancing in your chair stuff is definitely what I'm looking for. Thanks.

virtualgames0, that's jazz isn't it? Though I do like some of it, I have a hard time getting into most jazz music. I'll give him a listen though. Thanks.

I hope I haven't missed anyone who was nice enough to help me out. Thanks to all again.

I would suggest metal:

Shadows Fall - What drives the weak
Fear Factory - Transgression
God Forbid - Divinity
Soulfly - Bleak
Rammstein - Keine Lust
Machinehead - Imperium
Lamb of God - Laid to Rest
Killswitch Engage - Fixation on the Darkness
In Flames - My Sweet Shadow
Chimaira - Left for Dead

Sentinel, I've heard of some of those groups but have nothing by any of them. Metal isn't my favorite, but I do like some of it. I'll give some of those a listen. Thanks.

Porcupine Tree - Wedding Nails
Crystal Method - Murder
System of a Down - Violent Pornagraphy
Skindred - Pressure
Nonpoint - What a Day
Moby - Bodyrock
Dr. Dre - Next Episode
Faith No More - A Small Victory
Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.
Gruvis Malt - Ninja Goon
Deftones - Be Quiet and Drive (always good for driving 😉)
Jamiroquai - Canned Heat

I tried to keep it pretty mixed so there's a little bit of everything there.

MadHatter, I heard a song by System of a Down that I liked a couple of weeks ago, that title doesn't sound familiar, but I'll go see and then if it's not it then I'll look for the one I liked. Thanks for reminding me of them. I have Moby's Bodyrock on another CD. I'd forgotten about that song by Gorillaz, I'll get it. I liked some of Jamiroquai's stuff that I'd heard before so I'll check that one out and some of their others. I don't know much about the others, but since you have so many good suggestions on there I'm sure they're worth looking into. Thanks.
