So back a couple years, I'm watching O Brother Where Are Thou? with my husband, and noticed the preacher character was named Big Dan. Later, while drinking a fair bit of alcohol, I was joking with my husband about what else could be called a Big Dan. A large steely dan (look up the real meaning of the band's name if you don't already know.) I thought it would make a fine name for a nick on a tech board full of mostly boys, so I used it when I signed up here. Didn't intend to give out any personal information at the time (and was not sober either). Worked fine to remain gender-undefined until I actually made reference to my gender.
