Suggest me a mid-life-crisis ride

So I'm hugely overdue my official mid-life crisis, and I'm thinking perhaps while I have the money for sure, I'd better take a crack at the MLCR.

Life status: Not married, check. Greying, check. Balls definitely hanging lower than they used to, check. [Since being dumped]Transient girlfriends 20+ years my junior, check.

Current car: '10 Quattroporte (will keep)

Max budget: After taxes etc, US$ equivalent would be about $150K.

Something that will be fun to drive and cause heads to snap around and say "Look at that sad guy trying to be cool" with an intense patina of envy. Well, as much envy as a relatively paltry - in the overall scheme of things - $150K can engender. I don't mind looking at used, but would rather steer clear of maintenance nightmares.

It's just an idea at the moment, but who knows, I'm definitely not getting any younger.

I'd go the other way, grab a nice E type Jag, midyear Vette, gull-wing Benz, whatever one turns you on the most. If you pay enough from the right people you'll get the toy in great running shape and have something that is much more exclusive than the standard "I'm a rich douche" Porche or M.

E-Type Jag, beautiful, you've already got an awesome drivers car, now what about something stunning just for cruising on the weekends?

Edit: lurk3r got the first!

Ya, I went with the midyear, even where I live outside of Detroit, where there's probably the highest desnity of old vette owners, (there's 3 where I work alone) I'll see way more of the "exotics" than I will see my vette. I passed a Lambo on my 6 mile drive to work today (it's gotta be the 4 pro sports teams or something like that).

I was going to say an Audio R8 (will definitely turn some heads), but damn they've gone up on the price (~$150K > ~$200K).

For your budget I would consider a GT500. 🙂 Good god is that car gorgeous!

I did actually take a test drive in one a while back. I couldn't help but laugh at it, and not for good reasons. Once you get past the admittedly pretty compelling (douchy "redneck made good") presence and noise - God, what a piece of shit.

R8, yea - they're getting kind of common around my parts, and while I like the idea of owning one quite a lot they've never struck me as cars with a lot of road presence or panache - it's more like a sort of precisely made pen that you'd like to have because you're a pen enthusiast, if you see what I mean. Just the other day actually I parked in town in and my QP was sandwiched between a Gallardo and an R8 - and I'd not really noticed it before, but my ride has infinitely more road presence - and not just because it's larger.

I think whatever I get, I'd like it to have a significant degree of 'get out of my way' presence. Yet not in the 'Cleatus' way of the GT500 et al, something more sophisticated.

What was shitty about it?

Not really sure I know what you mean by that. What kind of car do you have?

I'm not sure I'd consider the GT-R a MLCR. It's kind of the Wal-Mart version of the pen for pen enthusiasts that I said about the R8. The enthusiasts know it's a giant-killer but is it an imposing showoff ride? Don't think so.

It's a car I would have bought ~20 years ago (and indeed I did have an R32).

Aston DBS? maybe a Virage?

It's a 'safe choice' for sure for a MICR. Presence, looks, known brand, etc.

I was actually looking at one before moving on from the XF-R, but decided on 'more of the same with less problems' (It's a sad day when an Italian car is infinitely more dependable than a British - kinda, I guess it's Indian now - one) instead of a coupe.

If you want an elite car, you're going to have to come up with elite money, and $150K ain't gonna do it. Start getting into $200K+ and MAYBE you'll have something less common. You'll get into the Aston Martin DB9 and Mercedes SLS type cars which definitely stand out.

It sounds like you want a Lamborghini Aventador with a Walmart sticker price.

I think that's exactly my problem as I pointed out. It's not that high a budget in the overall scheme of things. Which is why I said I wouldn't mind looking at used (though nothing too old I think). I don't have plans to go any higher.
