Suggest me a camera

basically I am looking for a camera for under $400 that I can purchase from a retailer that'll sell to the government via CC# over the phone. I need a camera that is somewhere from 5-7Mpxl's and a okay zoom. I am totally new to cameras pretty much and do not know alot about them.....

This camera has to be of the type that once you hit the button it takes a picture so that you can literally snapshot photo's real quick and take a bunch rather then wait for image stabilization and all the crazy flashes to go off. I need to be able to take pics on the fly pretty much.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am looking for something that takes SD Card memory and has rechargeable batteries that are not double A or triple A batteries.

Canon G9 is tops in the point-and-shoot digicam market. Well built, good zoom, built-in IS, excellent resolution, snappy performance. Just beyond your budget at $450. It's coat-pocket sized.

If size isn't an issue, get a DSLR.

If you're looking for quick response, no shutter lag, and good continuous shooting performance, then an SLR is your best bet. The Olympus E-410 and E-420 are some of the smallest D-SLRs you can buy, so you might want to look at those. If you buy an E-410, it should be just out of your budget.

You might also want to consider the Panasonic Lumix TZ5, since it's quite small, has a 10x zoom with good wide angle coverage (28mm), and 2.5 FPS continuous burst shooting. Price is between 300 and 400.

Rugged environment? Dust, moisture?
Get a Pentax K200D DSLR as it has weather seals...
or a Pentax Optio W50 if you want a P&S

if you want indestructable, the olympus 770 is hard to beat, literally. i took mine on the AT last year, and rain, shine, drop after drop, it just keeps going. and rated for 33 feet underwater ain't bad either.
