The fan is dieing and either needs to be replaced or a new video card. This is a Gainward Golden sample Geforce 3 64mb card. Would an ATI Radeon 9200 be an better card?

looking for something under $60

should be as good for gaming as the GeForce 3 at least

1. Cheap - Radeon 9200 is great but stay away from the ones with SE on the name of the card and make sure you get it with 128bit memory

as for it being better then the Geforce3 it would be about the same when running older games but maybe faster when playing the newer ones.

2. Midrange - Radeon 9600 Pro ... find the CHEAPEST one you can get and stay away from the SE versions or 256MB versions there sheeet

3. High end - Radeon 9800 non Pro ... OR Geforce FX 5900 Non Ultra 128 MB cards they are the best value high end cards that you cant go wrong with!!!

If i was you i would get a new fan its a wast getting a new card that will run your games the same as the one you already have ... 😉

NM, i misread. I would think you might get a used ti4200 for that price. Maybe a 64 meg one. YOu would notice the difference there and its a great card.

lol, you edited you post before I could post your quote...anyway, the card is fine for now for my GF who games occationaly and probably wouldn't see the difference of a geforce 2 mx and a 9800tx. 🙂 but...<bitchy voice>the fan is noisy</bitchy voice>

yeah, but I need to spend at least $10 on a fan. isn't anything better than this card by now?

<edit>looking at the 9200 I guess.</edit>

where is a cheap and quiet replacement fan? svc.com or elsewhere???

Here is the card link

I guess it's worth it to keep it for another year or so

ok...replace fan with this 1 or this 2?

For the midrange - if you get a Radeon 9600 Pro, beware the ones with 4.0ns memory. Those are total crap (I think they're called 9600 Pro EL or something).

They're called the 256mb pro's but the only things that resemble the pro is the 400mhz core. The mem is a complete 100mhz off. Thats a lot of Fvcking mhz! Oh well, it seems to be holding me over right now. Wait till next year, sell and get something better. I've learned my lesson.

My fans went bad on both of my visiontek gf3 ti200's during the time that Visiontek dissappeared off the face of the earth. I removed the fans, but could not remove the heatsink. I was afraid of damaging the card, so I left the heatsink on it and mounted a 486 fan on top. Worked rather well actually, probably cools better than the oem fan.

get a radeon 9600 Pro, but make sure it is pro, and not regular, se, or ez. those versions are slower then the pro by a good amount.
