Fair or not, watches like that that demonstrates a certain cachet amongst certain crowds of people, and that cachet can impact the impressions you leave people.

Is it possibly because they were thinking he had spent tons for the watch? And were only nicer to you because they thought they can snag a few more dollars from his wallet by selling him something else???

Well, duh.

The point is people recognize somebody who has the disposable income to drop thousands of dollars on something. That is the impression that is meant to be left - that and a certain taste. Certain job fields, and as dumb as it may be, do have that certain cachet that if people want to play in that field they need to sort of fit in by demonstrating a certain taste.

C'mon, all you have to do in a place like this is show 'em the MONEY! If anyone's rude to you because think you're not buying anything and totally ignore you after a couple attempts to get service, just say: I TRIED...... I'm going to your competitor across the street!........... and flash a load of cash as you walk out the door!

And I would imagine that original store would probably be glad to see you go because if you are somehow totally unable to communicate your seriousness and willingness to purchase something from a freaking sales person, then chances are it is probably your attitude and communication skills that are at fault.

So, what you're saying is.......... If I'm a millionaire and walk into a normal retail store wearing blue jeans, tshirt, flip flops and no watch, they should treat me differently?

You have no clue Pilgrim

EDIT: I drink Bud Light also!

What I am saying you are so painfully obviously not getting.

Again, for certain job fields there are certain 'looks' that are associated with it. Again, it may be dumb (and I don't necessarily agree with it) but that's just a part of business for some people.

Not everybody is into those fields; you seem wanting to make some sort of bizarre generalization about 'millionaires' that is just simply not accurate.

Additionally, as I was hoping I could imply, your attitude can make a huge difference. If you go into a nice retailer and don't get any assistance it *could* be because of your attitude and not what you are wearing.

With that also being said if you are a 'millionaire' and walk into someplace like Hermes wearing a t-shirt and flip flops you would have to be one of those rare species of millionaires that is dumb as hell if you were to wonder why you may not be taken seriously in such an establishment.

ATOTers are so clueless when it comes to watches and status in general. The things people think convey status are mostly irrelevant, and the disproportional amount of money people spend on things generally reflects their interest more than anything else.

I know people that wear $15k watches (one by Lange, and it's a beautiful watch). 99% of people have no clue what his watch is, so no status is conveyed whatsoever. Similarly, only a smattering of people have ever recognized my watches, and the ones that did were enthusiasts.

And about the nonsense of walking into Hermes wearing a t-shirt and flip flops. I've walked into such places with a hat, flip-flops, etc. and never had a problem. People look to you for confidence, not some silly social norms. Let's stop with the generalizations...

You're the one that implied the millionaire dumb, etc. from the start.

I believe we're on the same wavelength. Taking the Attitude and Dumb out of the equation, a retail establishment must not criticise from looks alone. It will hurt them in the end.
As for understanding the part of WHY someone wears a watch like this..... Look up! I already stated this.

Some of them don't look too bad though. Not my taste, but decent.

I have THIS watch style but with THIS color of watch face.

I like it, and I have had many compliments. However I will be amongst the first to admit that Burberry is not a watch company (I have no clue who makes it for them) so one could likely get a better quality watch by going elsewhere. Again, though, I like the style of the Burberry watches.

Given the OP's budget, I would also recommend looking at Seiko and Citizen.

I would consider looking second hand. There are some good watch forums with sales corners that will provide you a much better value than any local jewelery store and will also offer more variety.

who the f gives a shit about a pair of jeans?

. . . there is a not-so-subtle point in the above statement.

A nice pair of jeans make you look great.

Compare 7 jeans to piece of crap old navy jeans.

A watch will not make you look great

The one in your first link looks decent. Anyone know about the Burberry spec?

Not really; you think a CK model would look bad in a pair of Levis?

All designer jeans do is tell other people about your priorities.

Just like an expensive watch does.

HERE is the exact watch I have. I prefer the peach colored face over the plain stainless in that I found the plain stainless a bit boring.

The back of my watch says it's Swiss made (what isn't I suppose) so really the only positive is that at least it's not some "made in China" thing. Besides that I have no clue about the manufacturer.

I don't care how people spend their money. Everybody has their hobbies and money holes.

Yes, a watch is a status symbol as are a lot of things or all things. Clothes, cars, watches, sunglasses, houses, cookware, electronics.. whatever..

I wish all the 'suggest a ###' threads wouldn't go the status symbol route.

KnickNut3, I suggest you visit http://www.timezone.com and browse their forums. They'd be more than willing to suggest something for your price range and requirements.

I've got a tag heuer 2000 quartz. It's older, but there's a newish model out that I like better than mine though. I paid $660 for it. It was listed at a little over $1000. Don't be afraid to talk them down. (I was at a nice jewelry store, but there's room to move)

It's a great beater watch. I've worn it in some pretty dodgy situations and it's served me well. gl, ignore the treadcrappers--watches generate a lot of hate for some reason. :)

Here's the watch I wear 85% of the time. Notice the mickey mouse at 6 o'clock? I bought this at Disney World about 5 years ago. Paid around $150. for it and it has held up nicely. Disney Swiss Watch

Where's Rossman and Casiotech? Tom Welling fans they are

I did'nt know this until I started watching Smallville, but it's the same watch that Clark wears in the Smallville series....... I kid you not! Hey, but his does'nt have mickey on it :p

We were watching an Episode and my wife screamed......... He's wearing your WATCH **LMAO** ......... I'm like no way. Yep, it's the same watch minus the mickey......exactly.

My favorite watch is my dad's old Omega Seamaster. It's so simple and beautiful... it's also so old that I have no idea what model it is and can't find it online.

I bought this watch from gnomonwatches and I think it looks cool as hell. Check out the site, the guy has some really nice, different kinds of watches at some good prices.

As for the winners who complain about the price of the watches: When you finally leave mom's basement and stop driving your riced out Honda Civic, and decide that you want a nicer car, stop and do not even think about it! After all, its just a car, right? Why would you want a nicer looking car? It just conveys a " Hey look I am an asshole" image right? Yep, we got the brain surgeons out today.

Edit Wanna really screw with your inability to tell time? ( I kid!) Check out the single hand 24 hr watch. Cosmic!

Peace

So 300lb Mindy Munch-a-lot winches herself into those 7 jeans and it means she now looks great but that same 300lb heferasaurus looks like a fat cow in Old Navy jeans?

I can't suggest a watch, but I find it humorous that some people here think a $300 watch is a status symbol. You really don't get into the "status symbol" watches until you hit the $1,000+ range, and even then, there are reasons why such watches are indeed better than their $100 counterparts. A $2,000 Omega Seamaster is a fantastic watch, both aesthetically and mechanically, and well worth the price to many people. Now, these people could argue that a good watch isn't worth that much to them, but that's about it.

Back in the early 80's we had a pheasant hunter come out. He was paying us to hunt through a mutal friend (this guy was our stockbroker's stockbroker :) )

My brother pulled in with his cherry red '69 vette. He had just bought it that summer for $6000 and was quite proud of it. Well, this hunter waited until he came over and was introduced then asked him why people wear $6000 Rolexes. He pealed back his shirt to show us his Rolex and said because they can't get their 'vetts on their wrists. :)

My brother still has the car and I'd guess it's worth somewhere between $20 to $30 grand. Anybody know how much a 1980's Rolex is worth now?
