I've messed around with Linux a few times in the past and I'd like to see what the advancements have been in the past 8-12 months as it's been a while since I've last screweth around with that. Consider me a newb and the friendlier the distro the better.

Thanks 🙂

knoppix

runs off a cd (no install) great hardwrae detection and plenty of apps to try out before you install or dedicate a machine to linux

mandrake 9.2

very easy to set up and configure things, great for newbs, lots of software and the like.

Wow thanks Spyro just read up on all of that... I'm not sure if mine is affected or not. I have the 16x48x24x48x DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive, it starts with HL-...yaddyaddya.. so I might need updated firmware to avoid screwing it up. Definitely going to look into that before installing Mandrake. 🙂

Libranet is my favorite distro, and quickly becomes the favorite distro of anyone who tries it out. Its Debian-based, has a great install tool, and has a great admin tool. Downside? The newest version isn't free. You can download an older version for free (around 8 months old), but the latest and greatest will cost you.

OSNews and Distro Watch are great sources to help you pick out a new distro. I recommend Libranet all the way though.

It all depends on what you are looking for...CD base or hdd install base with GUI installer.

CD base - Knoppix, Damn Small, Morphix, Gnophix & Dynebolic (can be install onto hdd then use Apt-get install to update synaptic)

Hdd install with heavy GUI - Mandrake, Redhat & Ark.

I don't have free time to waste. I like easiness/GUI etc...

Mandrake has always seemed like the best distro for me, and I've tried a versions 6 and then 9... I haven't tried the latest, 9.2 though. I wonder if there are many improvements over 9 or 9.1?

I've tried Knoppix lately and was very impressed though it installed far too much cr@p for my liking so I've got rid and decided to look at Gentoo instead. I downloaded the Gentoo ISOs afew days ago and got round to installing them last night. I gotta say...I'm very impressed! I think this may the be start of a long lasting, happy relationship
