suggest a degree?

I'm intending on going back to school next year... applying to SDSU, for pursuit of a master's degree. I haven't decided which one.

ultimately, my intention is to apply to UCSD for a Ph.D. in Economics. problem with that is my grades from undergrad = not so good. and I don't have the math necessary for ucsd's econ program. (3 semesters calc + linear algebra)

so i've been thinking what I want to do. a simple answer would just be to get a MA in Econ from SDSU..that'd be relatively easy. a tougher answer would be to get a MS in Statistics, which would give me a more rounded skillset. and if i decided to stop there, i'd have a degree worth something. (no jobs for econ till phd 🙁)

my goal from all this is to do research, and write books.

by my thinking, statistics would be a very complementary degree to econ. and the math req for UCSD would be taken care of in the first year of statistics. (in fact, they require it.)

suggestions?

Probably to not get laid with degrees like that.

Actually, yeah, what is the goal here?

i mentioned it in the OP.

short term is internships available during school. long term is research for schools or companies, then book-writing.

my current vision of a book would look at a "tragedy of the commons" occuring in congress by lending ear to special interest groups. but it's a bit more inclusive than that.

course, it's not exactly fleshed out.

You don't need an advanced degree to be a writer. You're not really defining any career goals here. Other than writing a book, what types of internships, and what types of research?

Get the MS. Do a Masters Thesis also. You're doing a Phd. Many CSU schools have "projects" where people do part time work and part time school. That's more the equivalent of an ME or so rather than the typical MS at a UC system. You want that thesis because it will help you with your PhD.

I'm screwed because I got shit GPA during my undergrad. Forget the top UC schools anymore. I will do an MS at SJSU and work my butt off and hope for a decent PhD admission later...

What are your current earnings?

How much will it cost you to get the degree?

What will your earnings be once you have the degree?

How many years will it take to break even?

earnings now: 0.

state schools. ~2000 per semester at SDSU, then ~6-8000 per at UCSD.

UCSD is a research institution. Hoping to alleviate some of my tuition/fees through stipend by doing research for professors... at least at UCSD. as far as at SDSU, dunno.

i'm living at my parents house atm, and can commute to both schools from here no problem. i'd *like* to move out, but i have a grand total of $6000 to my name, no car of my own, and unable to find any fucking job.

earnings with MS in statistics... i'm guessing would hit around 60,000/yr to start. (i'm guessing. whatever if i'm wrong.) earnings with an MA in economics... uh.... i think i'm the same boat there that i am in now.

So the goal is to stay a lifelong student?
