------------Suggest a 19" LCD

Never had a LCD panel before, and going from a 19" Samsung 997df (PURE Utter CRAP!!).

Want to budget around $350 for a 19" LCD w/ 8-bit color & DVI input. Low response times are nice, but not at a sacrifice of image quality. I will use it for 5% gaming/20% Video/25% music/50% web. (I have a radeon 9700pro, so I won't be doing much gaming;-)

I read the sticky post for the 'LCD Buyers Guide' at the top of the Video forum. It?s insightful on what to look for, but I hope some of you could suggest a great image quality LCD for my price/specs above.

I'm sure many of you will recommend what you have. But also let me know what else may be out there. Thanks

First of all,

Budget around $350 = 6-bit TN panel = 260 K colors = extended to 16.2 M by dithering

That being said, the most popular 19" LCDs around $350 or below with 6-bit TN and DVI input are:

BenQ FP91G+ (Brightness 250 cd/m^2, Contrast 550:1, Response Time 8ms)
Dell 1905FP (Brightness 250 cd/m^2, Contrast 800:1, Response Time 20ms)
Dell 1907FP (Brightness 300 cd/m^2, Contrast 700:1, Response Time 8ms)
Hyundai L90D+ (Brightness 300 cd/m^2, Contrast 700:1, Response Time 8ms)
Samsung 940B (Brightness 300 cd/m^2, Contrast 700:1, Response Time 8ms)
ViewSonic VX924 (Brightness 270 cd/m^2, Contrast 550:1, Response Time 3-5ms)

Among them Samsung 940B is perhaps the best in image quality (so I bought it!). A good place to start with is a series of survey articles in BeHardware.com:

Well if I bump my budget up to $400, would that get me a 8-Bit panel? Or would I have to go much higher to get 8-bit color?

The best 19" 8-bit panels are the Samsung 970P and ViewSonic VP930b. You're looking at $450 as a starting point unless you want to buy one used. But do a check on Price Watch to see if you can find one of these any cheaper.

Dude, i bought the samsung 940b after reading reviews and its awesome. The huydai monitor has the same specs and cost less but people are having a lot of problems with them so i bought the more reliable samsung. Its perfect. No ghosting, great colors and no dead/hot pixels! buy it and you wont' regret it.

How about the Samsung 940t? Is it any better/worse than the Samsung 940b? Is it worth the extra $40?

Is it true with the 940b I have to buy a DVI cable? Also, I live in Boston and I want to actually see the 940b in person, but this sucks, as I can't seem to find a place that carries it. Not @ BestBuy or CompUSSR, or even local small shops....ugghh.........

The 940t does have 8-bit but it will have quite a slow response time. I recommend the 940b.

Samsung 940T:

8-bit PVA panel, Brightness 250 cd/m^2, Contrast 1000:1, Response Time 20ms, Ergonomic Four-Way Adjustable Stand: Height, Pivot, Tilt, Swivel

If you don't care about extremely slow response time, 940T might be better than 940B in image quality, but the difference is very small, I guess. The image quality of 940B is good enough for most users. But 940T comes with adjustable stand.

You have to buy a DVI cable like this separetely from Samsung 940B. A good place to buy LCDs is Buy.com. They accept returns for whatever reason without restocking fee. In case of dead pixels, they pay for return shipping (UPS shipping label appears instantly if you click "defective"!).

Well I've narrowed it down to the Samsung 940bSamsung 940b or the ViewSonic VX924: Which would you go for?

Another thing is I won't be home during the week, so not sure if I should have it delivered to my job, or take a chance of it being left on porch.......

that vx924 is awfully expensive i would go for the vx922 for that price.......they were under $300 around christmas time, so was the 940b as well. Both are superb monitors though i myself have a 940b and highly recommend it, i cant speak for the viewsonic but im sure its also of high quality. I would get which ever is cheaper.

I hear the 940b is not adjustable? In all the pics I see for it, the panel is tilted back a bit, so the screen points to a the celling a bit. Can I bring it down so its not tilting up or down?

And do I need to buy a DVI cable?

Another point you may need take into account is ergonomics. The top of the screen should be near eye level, so that you are looking slightly downward, with an angle of roughly 20° toward the center of the screen.

940B Hight 16.6"
VX924 Hight 18.4"

VX924 is 2" taller.

As I said repeatedly, you have to buy a DVI cable if you choose 940B!

People said the Samsung 710T didn't come with a DVI cable yet mine did, so your results may vary.

My 710T supported HDTV-in, yes. I can hook it up via an analog VGA connector or DVI connector to my HDTV tuner. It even downscaled 1920x1080 to 1280x1024, much unlike my current ViewSonic VP930b. I suppose the Samsung 940b will be of the same caliber and capabilities of my 710T, if not better.

LoL of course you can tilt it back. That person may be taller or the dimensions of his desk might be lower than his viewing angle so he aimed it up. Are you talking about budwise? Mine stares directly at me and is perfect, so no replacement stand for me. It doesnt have a huge tilting angle but it does tilt down and up to some degree. Also yes you need to buy a DVI cable i got a high quality one from best buy i think for around $30, but the cheaper ones on newegg should serve you well also.

Well I ordered my 940B this morning from newegg. $344 with shipping. I only live two states over; so assuming I'll get it on Monday. A few days after I get it, I'll let you guys know what I think.

Oh, and btw I got a 15' gold plated DVI cable from radio shack for $13.

Man, I remember when I paid $300 back in 2000 for a Samsung 955df CRT monitor and I thought it was insane. This is my first ever LCD monitor. I hope I get my money's worth with the 940b!

The next thing I?ll buy for my pc is the Audigy X-Fi Music sound card. Have the Audigy2 ZS now.

You can adjust the tilt on the 940B, I own it also. It's a great monitor, use the Natural Color software to tune your color and you will be good to go. I was hesitant about getting an LCD monitor because I do a lot of gaming but I couldn't be happier.

Yah i had the gold plated radio shack one with my old MAG lcd and it served me well, it was of high quality but it looked like it had been packed in the plastic by a 5yr old. lol you might know what i mean...
