I have an almost 4 year old son that loves chocolate milk, I usually buy the 8 ounce horizon brand; but it contains sugar. He usually drinks 6 ounces a day.

I'd like to make my own using grass fed milk + sugar free chocolate. Any recommendations?

You do know that milk has sugar in it, right? You can add raw cocoa to milk and it's gonna have sugar.

This works but one should use full fat milk to get the cocoa to disperse better and to bring out the cocoa flavor. It will be more bitter than with added sugar.

I was more meaning that 'sugar free chocolate milk' isn't. But yeah, if you're gonna have milk, might as well fatten it up so it actually tastes good :)

Yes, I understand. But I'd like to make it with as little sugar or sugar free chocolate as possible, since milk has sugar I believe.

Nope, he is not. He doesn't/ not allowed to consume a lot of sugars anyway; so I don't have a problem with buying the horizon chocolate milk.

I was just thinking about this the other day and wanted to see if there're better options.

Horizon's pretty good. DairyGold brand is also good and bit cheaper (still no HFCS). If you find it too sweet, cut it with half and half, that's what I do. :)

Thanks for the suggestions, I ordered some Organic Valley brand off amazon since it says no sugar added.

I will buy some cocoa powder and see how that works.

I don't trust the no sugar syrup, sounds too good to be true.

Not sure if serious.
Wants sugar free chocolate, "doesn't trust" sugar free chocolate syrup.

Technically he wanted sugar free chocolate milk, which doesn't exist. I wouldn't trust sugar free chocolate syrup either, but then I just use cocoa powder.

Sometimes the best thing to do is put your hands in your pockets. Repeat after me, sugar is not evil. Carbs are not evil. Fat is not evil. Too much can be a problem. There is no magic percentage or, quantity that marks the "bad" point for adults or, children who have a completely different metabolic profile. If your child is not obese, eats a variety of foods and, gets plenty of exercise, stop worrying and keep your hands in your pockets.

I would stay away from Sugar Free products, that just means they add artificial sweeteners in there, which are way worse than real sugar.

I doubt the kid will like unsweetened cocoa powder, but you never know, give it a shot.

I always wonder why a group of people who hate pseudo science are so willing to latch on to anything regarding food. From fad diets to snake oil supplements, no theory is too far out for these hard core 'scientific,' logic worshipping, 'health' fanatics.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a better diet for kids & adults. You make it seem like I or some parents are freaking out, we are not.

Sugar is not evil, nowhere in the OP is that mentioned. But if I can save some $$ & end up with less sugar in my sons drink by making my own coca powder+full fat milk; will have to try it and see if it tastes good though lol

Thanks for the constructive answers.

There is nothing wrong woth wanting a better diet however, you have to know what that means. Simply cutting sugar doesnt do it. Don't get your feathers ruffled, I'm not targeting you. Also, this is the first time you've mentioned wanting to save money.

An unfocused rant is probably better suited by its own thread than one started by a member asking specifically about no sugar (or no added sugar) chocolate milk.

Oh, I thought cutting sugar was the only thing needed for a better diet; silly me....

It's a part of the equation. Saving money is the frosting on the cake.

It's just a thought I had really, that I wanted to do some research.

It's Friday and I'm stuck at work so, I'll rant if I want to.
