When I was little:

Cake tasted good, and made you feel Cake.

Modern 2010 cake phenomena:

Cake tastes like sugar, makes me feel insulin and depressed.

I just don't feel the cake, the baked milky scent..

Too much sugar in modern cake?? :\

People like sweets, so that's why there's more sugar in cake. And yes, I agree that some cakes have too much sugar in them.

I asked the bakery once, "you got anything that's not extremely sweet?"

And got the WTF face in return. :\

lol sorry man.

Maybe make your own cake and not put so much sugar in it? They do make cakes for diabetics I believe. Not sure how they taste though.

Depends on where you go. But I agree - at least from bakeries, their cakes have seemed to get sweeter over the years, particularly the gross frosting that most bakeries seem to use. It's unbelievable how much sweeter someone can make nearly pure sugar. Either that, or it's the amount of frosting has significantly increased.

I've never been a fan of cake. I don't remember the sweetness changing, but I always thought it was too sweet... Or something anyway. I'll happily eat ice cream until I'm stuffed, but (birthday)cake sucks.

Go to a Chinese bakery, their cakes are generally less sweet than western bakeries.

I got some cupcakes from Amazon Fresh and they had about 3 inches of frosting on top. That seems a bit excessive to me.

Too sweet + too much frosting. Put more effort into the flavor than doubling the butter and sugar please.

I hate the frosting on cakes. Always too damn sweet. I'm much much of a cake person. The only cake I'll always eat is Tres Leches.

Bakeries put way too much fucking frosting on Cake. It's really disgusting, being(usually) just sugar, vegetable shortening, perhaps Vanilla or other flavouring agent. Frosting should just cover the Cake, not be a portion of the Cake!(Ya, I realize it's a "Portion" either way, it should be an insignificant portion--low single digits)

It's best to make your own cake, then you can control what goes into it. Even the cake mix isn't as sweet as a lot of grocery store cakes.

Sugar is a cheap filler and North Americans love their sugar. A good bakery won't do this. It's best to avoid grocery store bakeries and find a good (proper) Italian one.

Or just eat pie. :)

Bake your own. Prefab cakes are usually nasty, full of veg oil instead of butter.

That's why I prefer cakes from Asian bakery, generally they are less sweet. Japanese bakeries are amazing.
