For a business ethics course I'm in I have to write a 3 page paper about ethical issues portrayed in a movie, and Office Space is on the list, so I had a couple of beers and watched it last night.

I'm writing the paper, which is certfied 100% BS right now, while at work.

Is that wrong?

Doing things other than work that aren't necessary (getting a drink when parched, going to the bathroom, etc) can be "wrong" regardless of taking a course in business ethics or not. Being in the class may show that you know better, but I mean... if you don't know that already... :p.

Is it necessarily bad? Sometimes taking a break from work can be more productive than just doing work the whole time.

A lot of things come to mind when I hear your topic.

1. Internet use at work. Is the Boss privaledge to view email. Retrict use.
2. Yes, Going out with co-workers, (The boss -->worker relationship). If it gets too close is that fair (both male and female).

Among others I would simply just rent all of the seasons of office space and simply go though each episode and finding things that are ethical dilemas.

I'd be more upset that the job doesn't allow you to work from home, which would have let you put all of your energy into your paper without having to look over your shoulder to see if anyone will stop by and ask what you're working on!

Something's up with my Comcast, and my VPn was really fvking crappy this morning. In order to have some semblance of doing "real actual work" I had to come in.

Office Space is an over exaggerated parody of the common office. A lot of things that go on in our offices all the time are protrayed in office space but is made fun of.

For a more conservative movie I would try Boiler Room. Considering it deals with people who "Rock the Boat". You could relate this to past media issues when people rocked the boat.

1. Why when someone points wrong in a corp that person is fired?
2. Are Whistle Blowers really heros?

Mike Judge's 1999 film, Office Space, is a timely satirical characterization of the twenty-first century office culture. In today's competitive corporate employee marketplace it is necessary to compensate workers emotionally as well as fiscally. The reality is that some corporate cultures have made some or all of their human resource policies, without any objective moral reasoning. The result being that policies may exist for the sake of an appearance of employee consideration rather than any real good said policy actually accomplishes. Office Space exists as satire, rather than an absurdist fantasy, because of this truth.

^^First paragraph, yes I know it sucks and doesn't make sense. Thanks.

steppinthrax - Shut Up. Look here then here. Got it?

It's not all that exaggerated.
