I'd say you should try it with pen and paper first. It'll get you addicted.

Not once you figure it out. Tehre are patterns to it and methods to use to solve it quickly.

The guys at work and I do these daily. 2 of us can solve just about any puzzle in 5-10 minutes. Even the hardest ones.

I think Sudoku is fun.. but it's not better than crosswords, it's just different. Does it really require that much brains? You can figure out most of the puzzles with 4-5 predictive steps... it can be fun, but not quite brain-teaser fun.

Crosswords make you pull out remote associative logic. You have to connect completely unrelated definitions in your mind with those ideas of the creator.

They both offer something to exercise the mind.

I need to give Soduku a try. I used to like those puzzles that look like a crossword puzzle, except they just give you a list of words and you need to make them all fit. Does anyone remember what those are called?

I agree. Once you get the hang of Sudoku you can blow through.

hmmm. interesting point.

However, both are a blessing to an otherwise boring lunchbreak during work.

Agreed. The only thing Sudoku really requires is persistence. Writing a program that can solve Sudoku would be a much better challenge.
