Suddenly IE 5 opening has slowed to a crawl ?

I have the following system here:
Msi k7t pro2a
duron 650@1000
256 megs of crucial pc133
radeon 64 ddr es
sb live plat 5.1
pioneer dvd drive
intel nic
Win2k pro

Everything has been fine for awhile and plenty speedy, but all of a sudden yesterday opening IE started taking a much longer time. It went from pretty much instantaneous to taking 7-8 seconds to open each new window (yes actual clocked time).
The only thing I have added recently would be the dvd drive but I just swapped it with a cd drive from another machine and I've had that one for years with no issues. Checked startup and its still the same, only using about 70 megs of ram when this is happening and low cpu resources.
Any ideas why this would happen?
thanks,
Daniel

Empty your history, cookies, cache and whatever other stuff it collects. You may need to defrag. It's possible that more ram is needed since the dvd drive may be allocating ram for itself. Have you got a lot of backround programs you could close to see if it makes a difference? Having Auto insert notification turned off can conserve cpu cycles, or having a disk in the drive. You could also look into chipset drivers.

Oddly enough it was just a defrag, I figured since it was a recent system build and barely any of the drive was used there was no way that would be the problem but left it running today and it all seems back to normal now, thanks for the suggestions.
