Suddenly can't get to Google?

Hey guys, my system is as follows:
Pentium 4 2.4C ghz
Abit IS7
1gb Corsair RAM
Onboard 3com Gigabit NIC

So last night my network connection just stops working. Everything is connected fine. I am on AIM and that is fine but I cannot get to any web sites. So I reboot and then I can't get any internet access at all. I reinstall the drivers for my onboard NIC and everything is working again. The thing is, I can't get to certain websites, namely Google and Altavista. I just get "the Page cannot be displayed". What the heck is causing this? Thanks in advance!

I thought that as well but I am in college and my roomate and I are connected to the same switch...he can get to sites fine, though.

Pinged both Google.com and 216.239.53.99 and timed out Using Bellsouth DSL, and have been for a year, no problems. Then two days ago this happened and apparently I am not the only one. I use Yahoo and Google dozens of times a day everyday. (well, used to)

Since it worked on your roomate's machine, I checked the other computers in the house, and they can all connect to google no problem. This really is weird. Same network. This is frustrating AND odd. No virus, no config changes, and the sites are not blocked.

Check your HOSTS file, in your C:\Windows and C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc directories. Just edit it with notepad.

Remove all those nasty lines refering to Google, Yahoo and Altavista ...

Save and restart browser.

im curious. explain please?

I don't have a HOSTS file in C:\Windows but in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and C:\Windows\Help. In the one in the \etc\ directory, there is no reference at all to any sites. In the one in C:\Windows\Help, there was a long list which I deleted. I saved the file, restarted IE but I still can't get to these sites.

A simple explanation:

The hosts file serve as a local DNS host. When you type "www.google.com", firstly your browser checks the HOSTS file, and if no mention is found, it looks for it on ISP's DNS database. This gets translated to an IP address, and your browser will connect to Google's server. If there is a mention in your HOSTS file, then your computer will directly connect to the IP listed. What happened is that some sort of virus/worm is out in the wild changing people's HOSTS file. An imense list of sites are then forward to a bogus IP. Removing these lines fixes the problem.

I'm kind of tired ... hope that I explained this correctly.
