I have played for some days with a sudden fps lag in cs 1.6 and CZ.
it only happens when i shoot or comes into smoke, or i come out to big places or many players on the server ( i can drive BF2 and WoW with perfect FPS same config but whitout any probs, it's only in cs 1.6 and CZ )
I got rate 25000, cl_updaterate 101, cl_cmdrate 101, fps_max 101.
4 gb ram, 2.6 quad i3, msi N240GT MD1G graph card, mainboard i cant remeber.
The wierd thing is that it have been 100 fps whitout drop for long time, bud suddenly i began to drop.
The graph card is all new.
Any ideas what to do?
Cause i'm really pissed about this :(

Thx for reading :)

Sounds like your card is down clocking.

Either turn on some AA + AF for Half Life from the control panel, or set the power management to Max performance rather than adaptive.

Be careful though, because the latter commonly causes the card not to down clock once you get out of a game, even if you just change it in one game's profile.

Forcing some AA and AF for the Half Life profile is probably the best way to force your card into high clocks all the time.

On a light note, lol at your cvars. If your monitor is 60Hz, try

developer 1
rate 25000
fps_max 120
fps_modem 120
updaterate 60
cmdrate 60

See how it feels ;)

your Gt240 is dropping frame rates in COUNTER STRIKE? COUNTER STRIKE? That is really bad news...

If indeed your card is downclocking, run GPUz and turn the graphs into averages to make sure.

A 240 should run these games just fine. Especially paired with an i3.

One thing to note, even on my system at 1680x1050 i STILL get drops to 40fps in huge battles in DOD and sometimes in CS:1.6. I just think the engine wasn't coded properly to handle so much going on t once that even a rally fast Core2 still has issues. A common joke for most people on the Steam Forums is that you get higher fps in Source than you do in the GOLDsr engine (HL1). Every update makes HL1 run worse and worse.

my intel core 2 duo gets 80-100fps at all times w/ 9800gtx+ so I'd definitely look into it... perhaps EVGA precision could offer you some insight ?

My system usually runs at 200+,it never, ever goes under 175fps.

No way you should be dropping to 40s in CS 1.6 and CZ. Only time I can think that would happen would be if you smoke grenade spammed an unreasonable amount just for the hell of it.

Using fraps it showed such amount in minimum frames a few months after I achieved my current setup. IIRC it averaged 220+ with a max of 450 or so with developer 1 enabled. This in a 32plyr AZTEC map, which includes all rain, sound and shader elements of the engine. Almost all of it ran off of the CPU on a single thread.

I literally get 300-400fps average on a normal map with 20 or fewer players in 1.6. Just maps like that can tax the hell out of your system when you can see 16 actual players at once and they are all moving and firing.

These issues are magnified in DOD because it is much more demanding and even more unoptimized.

Ah, yes, Aztec is the most demanding map. I usually turned off the weather effects anyway. But I'm sure even on my Athlon XP machine I was still getting above 40 fps even in 32 man matches.

I remember getting almost always above 30 fps in aztec and 60 in almost all other maps with my P42.8 and a radeon 9250se 32mb @1024x768. however, the engine has been butchered and does not perform well on modern CPUs. My Q8200 @3ghz (where i benched it) gave astounding fps as stated earlier, but was sometimes bogged down in intense situations.

I played DOD1.3 last night for an hour. Complete god awful fps drops in serious situations. Hit down to 35fps at times. I know dod is way more demanding than cs, but really? My CPU is a few orders of magnitude faster than my old P4 or my Semp1700+, yet still gets bogged to death. My 4830 is many levels faster than that old 9250. My ram is 8x+ as fast, is mean seriously.

The engine sucks now. It was the whole reason i kept upgrading.

I'm gonna have to jump into some 1.6 then and see how it performs on my new hardware. I've played lots of Condition Zero on my setup and never had any of those performance problems.

This is what happens, since its OpenGL . To fix it you you must go to Mass and pray for fixture. jk jk lol.

Those sudden FPS drops are only in CS uh,

IS this CS original or CS Source ?

If its CS then theres nothing you can do about it except keep uninstalling and install different drivers.. lol sorry.. Thanks gg and gb
But you are partly to blame, shame on your for playing a 15 year old engine game LOL, graphics cards cant handle that no more, they demand more, the card trips out when it sees 1000fps in CS lol and downclocks possibly or whatever. I think if this was source,, u can just change the direct3D try all of them until you get it right DX8 DX9 etc... good luck chap!
