most PM type cold medicines have these ingredients

Acetaminophen - Pain reliever & fever reducer (AKA Tylenol)
Pseudoephedrine - Decongestant, clears up sinuses (AKA normal sudafed)
Diphenhydramine - Antihistamine, blocks allergic response, also knocks you out (AKA Benedryl)

If it's the antihistamine that's making the difference you could try a non-drowsy one like Claritin
