Otherwise great vacuum, does a great job and seems like it's built pretty solid.

I'd definitely look into the amazon refurbs as an option.

PS. I was in Sharper Image or Brentanos (mall stores) and I think there's a newer model out now, they relocated the attachment storage and the cannister part looks like it's been re-engineered.

Dyson makes a Pet vacuum also(hair), it's the purple one.

My parents own a rainbow. It's not an upright and uses water as it's filtration system. Expensive as a Kirby but I was pretty impressed with what it could do. If I had $1500 to spend on a vacuum I'd get one.
Mind you I've heard good things about the Dyson and it's a LOT cheaper.

we have a rainbow and it does clean well. it's annoying to use and cannisters can be a bit of a b1tch. plus the cleaning part really sucks.

i'm looking to buy a dyson. but mb i should buy that $130 hoover in the consumer report for daily easy stuff and use my rainbow for the big cleaning stuff.

Bought the red Dyson (DC14 with the floor attachment) last week. Dog hair? What dog hair? My old Hoover left a lot behind, but not this.

I've rarely heard of anyone who owns a Dyson who DOESN'T think it is the greatest thing since the internet. They must be doing something right. (aside from not paying off Consumer Reports)

that shouldn't have happened, Kirby's have a lifetime warrenty

they are the best vacuume ever made, and they have been in buissness for 91 years...

If there was something better out there that was cheaper, even by a little bit, Kirby would have gone out of buisness a long time ago

Anyone who spends a a lot of money on a vacuume will think its the best thing since sliced bread... I sold Kirbys for almost two years, and even though I am biased, I've never seen anything come close to cleaning as well as the Kirby...

Another vote for a Rainbow. Everyone in my family has one. They are expensive, but they are very durable and last forever. Seems to really get the dust out of the air.

well its just that consumers are easily manipulated. 7up tested slightly darker greener bottles for its soda, and testers concluded its soda tasted more lemony..even though nothing else had changed. lots of cases like that. if a product does reasonably ok, marketing/looks can fool a normal consumer, esp one that has already spent a load of cash and needs to justify his purchase. better just to spend ~200 on a normal vac.. works just fine according to consumer reports. if it dies, get another in the future:p

Normally I would agree 100% - but the people I know who have gotten one are usually more of the skeptical but astounded varity, like they thought it was going to be a POS and were surprised to find otherwise... (a couple of 30-something guys whose wives plunked down the $ for it come to mind)

Personally when I've looked at them in the store they sure FELT like overpriced pieces of plastic junk - but again, everyone's comments say otherwise.

I have 5 cats and just got rid of 2 big parrots and I go through vacuums like nobody's business(6 in the last 12 years) I liked the Fantom series of vacuums, which actually licensed the Dyson technology for its vacuums. But it was the same old story. Dont last two years. Damn cat hair infiltrates every nook and cranny. Hell, yesterday I took it apart and cleaned out all of the hair wedged up inside of it and around the wheels. I think I can be a certified repair person now. My next purchase is going to be a central vac system. I see no other alternative, save killing off the four legged demons, that will cost me less in the long run. At least a central vac has the canister that can be isolated from the main pickup point, kind of like a shop vac. So the hair would not be able to clog all sorts of mechanical parts up. Of course, if you rent a condo or apartment, then this isnt an option. But for me, I am know that if I spend 1000.00 to get the central vac, I can at least be able to replace the one main part(motor) if it fails. These new plastic vacs are near impossible to fix anything on them, except the belt. And I see you cannot even replace the belt on the Dyson.Stupid, if you ask me.

Peace

Every 6 months? Damn! I've bought exactly 2 vacuum cleaners in the past 15 years. What on earth are you doing to them that they only last 6 months?

we have a 20yr old hoover that still works great. we bought it at a yard sale about 10yrs ago for $20 when we first moved in together. not sure if hoover still makes them to last like that, but we will give them another shot if we ever need to buy another one.

I just bought a Dyson, less than two weeks ago. I absolutely love it. With four housecats, the hair is unbelievable but no challenge for the Animal. Worth every penny - only lacks someone to push it around for me.

I don't think I've ever had a vacuum "break". Belts, sure... but what breaks and renders the unit inoperable?

That's not true. People can't stand spending money on things that don't work right so they are very likely to complain. Typically, you will see more negative comments on things then positive ones because people are more apt to make a comment when they are pissed. I looked at amazon and I can't believe the positive comments. It is funny, it seems that people either give it a 5 or a 1 (mostly 5's)

just got a dyson DC07 animal for $350!! as a opened item from sears, was told the previous owner had buyer remorse cuz she paid $500 for it! works extremely well. I was suprised at how much dirt (such as soil) this thing picks up from my carpet, which was only recently cleaned with a dirt devil. about just as excited as I was first unwrapping my new 2005 fpw :) gotta love that high-tech feel.
