SUCK or BLOW????

Hi, I'm currently running my Alpha PAL6035 (wiht Delta fan) sucking air from heatsink (as Alpha says to), but I have heard some people that uses the fan to blow air into heatsink. I would like to know if there is any performance difference (less temperature) in the way you use the HSF. Also, I would like to know if there is any difference in the loudness of this fan (sucking or blowing air).

I know that most of you will say to me to make a test... But whatever... Lets discuss....

I have tried mine both ways and have noticed that is is about 2deg C cooler with it sucking the air through the HS. If the fan is blowing down on the heatsink some/most of the air collides with the ends of the fins, which creates turbulance, which means less air flow and more noise (from my experience).

if you're using the baffle that the Alpha came with, sucking will/should have better cooling, because of the design

I just got a pep66 myself, and I was wondering about that baffle thing. Is it better to leave it on & suck, or take it off & blow????

I don't know, but I think that with a PEP66 it would not make much difference... I've seen somewhere (cant remember) a test where they have put another fan in the other side of heatsink blowing air, and the original sucking air. They have very good results, and they were using a simple fan blowing (they said to use a cheap one or take from another old cooler)...

I wonder if we put 2 Delta fans (I just cant imagine the noise) with the PEP66...

Alpha's almost always suck.
The fins are made to be made more aerodynamically correct by sucking air throguh the sink.
awise is absolutely right, the air would collide with the ends of the fins, causing more noise + less cooling.

There is not really a big difference. I had my delta fan blowing on the heatsink and when I went to change to a sunon fan, there was a tremendous amount of dust on my heatsink.

My roomate has a Dual Pal's on a BP6 and a PEP on his CusL2, for his Pal, he gets 1-2 degres cooler blowing in, (he's tried all sorts of fan orientations), the sink also gets less dusty if you blow in,... for the PE< (he modded it to stand straight like the Pal) he's got the top fan blowing out and a second YS Tech fan blowing in from the side right now and it seems to be running very well...

i always thought sucking was better (no pun intended) but i'm not so sure now. i have the taisol 733 and the way it came was with the fan blowing onto the cpu. out of curiosity, i uncliped the fan and turned it around to suck instead of blow (again, no pun). what happened was it made a loud whistle like a jet engine and the tempd increased about 10c. i guess this hsf was designed to blow. wow, the inuendos in this thread are endless...

i think it's because the fan is thin, it doesn't suck much...or maybe the heat sink is too close and doesn't allow it to suck too much...
i'l flip mine and see

Those who are going to try flipping, post before & after temps if you don't mind.

i was told more heat is lost at the tip of the fins (so physics friend said this.) So I'd assume you'd wanna wisk that heat away by sucking. That's how my pep66u/delta is set up.

What do FOP 32's do? Suck or blow?? How do you tell?
Is it better to have a case fan sucking or blowing air??
And would it be better to have the case fan at the front or the rear of the machiene?
Thanks.

I once had my FOP32 suck air out. It's better to have the fan blowing in rather than sucking out. Temp different is about 2-3 celcius.

Thanks for your help.
Should you remove the thermal pad, and replace it with heat sink grease (Radio Shack)??

With my case fan, if I put some foam mesh to block out dust, will this lower the effectivness of the fan?
Thanks

Radio Shack grease is EVIL!
Use AS or keep the pad on. Thei're usually pretty good, in new hsf.

Getting Arctic Silver is easier said then done! There is only 1 place in the whole Australia that imports / sells the stuff, and they are about 4000 kms away!! The Radio Shack stuff is available at all the Tandy Electronics stores, and it only costs $4.
The FOP32-1 is very hard to get on!
