Hey guys, when building an Athlon XP based system, if you were going to keep it running at official speeds and you just wanted to put 1 basic 80mm fan in would you put a front fan sucking the air in and blowing it over the PCI card area or one fan blowing it out the back by the cpu?

Or has anybody tried having a fan that sucks in from the back and blows it accross the cpu?

Cheers,

I've done both fan in the front and back. Either is acceptable, just make sure that if you put the fan in the back that there is sufficient air intake holes in the front to get air in.

Don't try the fan blowing in the back over the CPU. The power supply fan is too close. The two fans will end up making a "loop" where the air just flows in a circle through the power supply, out the back, back in, over the CPU, and back into the power supply, getting hotter and hotter.

My power supply has a fan sucking air from the CPU area and through an additional grill, then blows it out the back. I already had a fan sucking out (PSU) so it seemed logical to have something blowing in, so I put in my extra 80mm CPU fan in the front.

Oh yeah, like mentioned earlier... having a fan sucking in from the back doesn't seem like such a good idea with the hot air recirculating like that.

I am thinking that one at the back would be best too. For my own system I always have 1 at the back and 1 at the front minimum but these machines are for clients and I don't want to go over the top. Now that people are requesting Athlon XP machines I felt a bit of extra cooling was a good idea.

A fan at the front in the cases I use would blow cool air over the PCI slots, therefore primarly over the modem, while one at the back is right next to the processor so it does seem logical.
