Successful 'nationalization' examples?

In light of the other thread on successful privatization examples, does anybody know of any successful nationalization examples in the US? I can't think of anything offhand that didn't have to do with war production, but I'm sure that there have to be a few examples in our history of this type of thing...

That is like saying your bomb shelter works because it hasnt blown over in the wind yet.

Bite me. This is a legitimate topic of discussion and you look like a tool for spamming. When the national discourse turns to the failings of privatization of formerly publically-run operations, one must consider situations where nationalization has worked to see where it might be prudent. You had a few examples of situations during the depression, but some aren't what we really think of today as nationalization, where the government directly takes over private industries. Think PEMEX in Mexico....stuff like our national parks pale in comparison as we created national parks where equivalent privately-run parks did not exist prior.

it seems people in this thread don't know what nationalization means

every last one of those things was public to begin with, not private and then bought or take over by the government.

Incorrect, the FDIC was never designed to cover a full catastrophic meltdown of the banking industry. It has done it's job of protecting the American people from numerous banking failures over the decades.

What you're saying is your bomb shelter didn't work because the Death Star vaporized the entire planet.

IIRC, police and firefighters in the much earlier years of our nation were in the majority of the country utterly private, and were later nationalized. I may have my history wrong here though.

I'm sure some of the 'evil commie' healthcare systems outside of the US were previously private.

Indeed. Thats why I try to take a pragmatic rather than idealogical approach when discussing these. I've yet to see an idealogy that seems to work very well when considering either...

Hard to make a claim either way on any nationalized industry. Because what measure of success do we use? In the free market an unsuccessful organization is buried by its competition. In the world of govt it is simply given more funds. Thus it will never die and people point towards that as a success.

Didn't private firefighters have turf wars and get into fist fights as to who would get to put out the fire (and presumably earn a profit) while the houses burned to the ground?
