Successful CD-to-CD burning when both are on same channel?

Back in the olden days, before ATA-33 came out, we would put the Source CD-ROM and the Target CD-R drives on different channels to prevent buffer underruns. i.e. 24x CD-ROM on Primary Slave and 2x CD-R on Secondary Master. Do we still need to do this with more modern equipment?

I have a Pioneer 16x DVD slot load and HP 8100i CD-RW on the same channel - Secondary. (DVD is master). The DVD is supposedly ATA-33 capable and the HP is DMA mode 2 capable (not UltraDMA). Anyways I was thinking of attempting a cd-to-cd burn on my 840mhz system, while doing some multitasking. should i try or not?

I used to do it on my 4x hp from my 32x toshiba, but now my pioneer 10x dvd seems to have issues with CD to CD copies to my 6x ricoh burner. Anyway, you can do it, but it will always be less reliable.

Oh...heh, I burned a CD directly from my Toshiba DVD drive to my Plextor 12/10/32a (both IDE) that are on the same channel last night. :) Worked slowly (it was an audio CD), but it worked. I have no choice but to have my channel set up like I do (weird stuff) cuz the cables aren't the right length for my case and where I would like to position my drives. :( Hopefully I will get some 5.25" to 3.5" converters so I can take my hard drives outta that damn cage that they have in the InWin Q500a full tower. :p

Well, I've done it with my Digital Research 40x CD-ROM, and HP 8250i 4x4x24x CD-RW. It worked (I wasn't doing multitasking though), but I wouldn't suggest it since doing CD-to-CD burns doesn't give the reader much time to try to read a bad sector on the CD before the CD-RW runs out of data. I always do image files now and I haven't had a coaster since I started using image files.

If you want to do a lot of burns while multitasking, I'd suggest getting a SCSI reader, a SCSI writer, and a cheap little SCSI hard drive to store the image file on if you decide to use an image file. You shouldn't have any problems working off of an IDE hard drive if all your burning is being done on SCSI.

My CD-ROM and CD-rewriter (ancient 2x Acer) are on the same IDE channel. It works fine - almost never a coaster (which is probably why I am hesitant to upgrade to a faster burner - I don't make too many copies anyway).

However, to be sure, why not make a disk image on your HD and then copy?

It works fine for me, but I usually play it safe. I've got a pioneer 10x/40x DVD/CD and an ACER 8x burner. Even though I can burn at 8x, I usually use 4x and when I'm burning CD to CD I just walk away from my computer and let it do its thing.

I cannot believe I waited this long to get a burner. It's going to be so much easier to make setup CD's now for systems.

Bought a 4x4x24 Mitsumi IDE for $120. Should be here Tues. I have two ATA66 drives on primary, so CD and CDRW will both be on secondary. I've got plenty of space so I'll image the files.

I've had my CD-ROM (master) and CD-RW (slave) on the same channel without a problem, but I always create an image on the hd.. I have been considering splitting them onto their own channels (if I can get it working) after being told that if I enable DMA on my CD-ROM (but not the CD-RW), the DMA still affects the CD-RW. Can anyone confirm this? Basically, from what I understand, if they're both on the same channel, the settings (DMA/Sync Data) will affect both drives, even if they're not selected on both drives. This sounded a little strange to me, but an HP tech told me this.

In this case (since it is recommended that CD-RW do NOT have DMA enabled), I have to "cripple" my CD-ROM for the burner.

Does it make a difference?

HP 9110i, 8x like yours, 2x Creative DVD (CT1760, maybe 20x read?).

Max cd-cd 4x, 8x if I do the drive image first with Nero 5.0, all while playing mp3s and surfing.

Cool, thanks for the responses. I will trust in the latest version of Nero's read-ahead cache feature to prevent any buffer underruns, also I'll make sure I'm not having a UT fragfest while burning. ;)
