*SUCCESS* calling atoters from India / perfume thingie

DigDog

Lifer
to make a short story long,

a few years back i was working as a street sweeper, because, reasons. working near Waterloo/Westminster, i would often find discarded stolen propriety, bags, wallets, passports, as there's a lot of tourists in that area and pickpockets are inevitable (which makes me feel good, knowing it's not only Rome to have this problem).

Anyway, one day i found a purse; there's a police station close by so i would return the things i found, and this purse belonged to someone from India, according to the passport in the purse.
Also, she had a stick of perfume that i could not resist but "appropriate".

This perfume was a small bottle, about lipstick-sized, with a "roller" on top, like a ballpoint pen.

Now, i've tried to find more of these (the label on the one i had was completely worn out), and i've gone to indian perfume shops, but the liquid in the one i had was thick, viscous, and the perfume lasted forever.
I'm a smelly bastard so to me this is a major feature; i've showered + deodorant + perfume this morning and i already smell like a beast, 5 hours later.

what the hell was in that stick? where can i buy some more?

When you said 'viscous' the first thing that came to mind was that it was a plant extract. Some can be oily and viscous but it's been a while since I've bothered with that sort of thing so no names come to mind. I would try a shop that carries botanicals. If you live near a major city it shouldn't be too hard to find one and then you can try samples. If not, then it's going to be more difficult but you can try calling a place that sells that sort of thing and describing it - color, texture, aroma, etc. They can probably narrow it down to a handful of possibilities.

tried that; went to a indian shop that sells indian perfumes, they had nothing that was as thick and odorous as that liquid.

i only had a little bit left in that roller, and having access to that perfume on a regular basis would be a lifesaver for me; i'm really a smelly human in ways beyond my control, you can't imagine the difference it made.

Patchouli? You should be able to find it at a flea market with heavy "ethnic" presence. Might not find it branded, but it'll be sold in unlabeled bottles. You may have to try a few til you find one you like. The best are colored like molasses.

Quite possibly the most detailed nonsense post I've ever read on ATOT.

You like the scent, I gather. And your only description is that it belonged to someone from India and it came in a roll-on applicator bottle.

Jeezus.

I agree with what Charmonium said. I believe the term is "ittar" and is what most closely resembles your description.

Here - check this site out

Start with the essential oils section and see if anything there rings a bell. If not, check out the botanical extracts and some of the other sections. Maybe something will sound similar to what you have.

oh ... well i have no idea. that chunk of my brain which identifies smell doesn't work properly. ?it smelled nice?
i could say, it didn't smell like your typical club perfume (Boss, cK One, that suff).
it was most likely an oil, probably no-alcohol, it didn't volatilize as fast as normal perfume / eau de' does. it was probably lavander based, and it was almost certainly for body application, because of the roller dispenser, so no "essential burning oil".

more important than the smell, was the color; it was tobacco-like, not clear, but almost brown, although it was not opaque.

i'm not trying to find the *exact* same smelling perfume, just trying to find WHAT that thing was. as long as i end up with something that thick, and that continues to perfume despite the heavy work, i don't care what substance it's made from, rose, lavander, jasmine, whatever.

my colleague from India also says it's called Itter, i'll try some of those.

OP - If you're interested in learning more about perfume, fragrance, cologne (whatever you want to call it), I highly reccomend http://www.basenotes.net

I used to collect fragrances and at one point had ~200 bottles and ~1000 samples.... Then I became employed and my soul was lost and gave it up (as well as gaming). Anyhow, it's definitely a good resource if you're ever interested in the subject.

SUCCESS !!

it was in fact Ittr, Itar, Atar, Attar, Itr, or any other variation of the name. I just received two different ones and they are both .. well, pretty much what i was looking for.

i knew i could count on you guys.
So what did you order? Don't keep us in suspense after all of that. We want to know damn it!!!

i went with
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00TKLYMKO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00V37SSF8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

despite the fact that they are one sold as Musk and the other as "sandalwood, patchouli, amber and moss", they basically smell the same.

so i wore some yesterday, and today when i woke up, the first thing was to actually smell myself, and the perfume was still there. this is some industrial-strength stuff yo.

also, tnx s0me0ne, i'll check it out. my mom used to collect "mignons" (no, not Minions), which are little sampler bottles, of perfume. i dipped in that collection often, damn that it was mostly women's perfume. i've tried so many and i think "man's" just means they spent less money making it.

the issue is still that i'm a huge m*er and even if i bathe in perfume it will be gone after maybe 4 hours. this Itar stuff instead will stay on for 2 days, and if you keep using it, it eventually permeates your clothes. keep at it and eventually all your house will have the same scent, which imho is a positive thing.

If you didn't find it I was going to suggest pure lavender oil. It's intensely strong unless you use only a drop or two, and it's fairly persistent.

Make sure you wash your hands. Often.

When I used to use the checkouts at the local Super Walmart, there was a guy who always manned the one checkout lane they had open late at night. He was a very overweight dude and you could smell him and the cologne that he drenched himself with from 30 ft away. And EVERYTHING that he touched in that checkout would smell of his stinking cologne. I actually had to wash my groceries one time after I got home. It was pretty disgusting.
