OK so I live on the 2nd floor of my apartments and have 5.1 sound for my PC and the sub is on the ground. I get afraid of turning it up somewhat loud because even at decent volumes when I lay down next to it the ground is slightly rumbling and it seems like it would be heard pretty loud down there so what should I do? Is there like a board that I can put under it to hamper the sound downstairs or what?

Ask them to work with you and let you know what level would be too loud.

FWIW, I'm on the ground floor but keep my bass about 1/2 way down...sometimes further down. But, I guess I'm just a good neighbor. ;)

Put the sub on a pillow thats on a small stool. For best accoustics it should be about a foot and a half- two feet off of the ground in the corner of the room. Then ask your neighbors if you can do a test. Turn it up untill they say it's too loud. Have a daytime noise level, and a night time noise level.

FWIW, i respect the fact that you are aware that other people live around you...

I bet most the twentyish and under crowd hear say something like, 'Fvck them...turn it up and if they don't like it, they can move!!!'

there was a guy above me in college who would listen to music when he got up a 600am, i didnt have to be up til around noon.
to his credit he probably didnt have it that loud, but it was right on the floor and it sounded like the temple of boom in my room.

i banged repeatedly on the ceiling with a broom a couple times, but he just stomped back. lousy POS.
we were acquaintances and had partied a couple nights earlier in the semester, but that abruptly stopped after i realised what i jerk he was.

so kudos to you for being considerate and aware of your surroundings.

lol thanks! Ya in my previous apartment some new people just moved in on the second floor which was above us and they had their sh*t so damn loud everyday, eminem and all that stuff. I listen to Metal but the kick drum can get pretty loud and repetative. Im kind of a shy guy so I dont think I'll be askin the neighbors for a sound test but I'll get me a little stool and a small pillow as stated above. Thanks guys and if you have anymore input feel free to post.

It's not easy at all to absorb low frequency sound. You need quite thick sound absorbing material. On a PC sub, it won't be as bad as a home theater subwoofer (where you need dense foam that's several feet in thickness), but it's still not easy.

Maybe you should try using a low frequency tranducer to give you the rumbling, and turn your sub down. They're reasonably cheap.

A low frequency whatserducer? Well I just dont want the floor to rumble to much because I hate getting warnings from the APT people, it makes me feel bad. Anyways I got some Playskool stool and threw a nice fitting pillow on it and am going to test.

You pay rent, right? As long as they are not sleeping when you're gaming or watching movies, you have every right to live your damn life.

This is a very sensitive issue with me.

Oh, ANUBIS, I love my SVS too! I have a PB2-Plus. :D

Do they make SVS's for cars? Oh and that pillow thing worked pretty well for not having the rumble go through the ground but when Im still under my desk there is that boom noise so that part now concerns me. Any sort of carpeting I can put on the walls to keep this down or would that f up the noise?

SVS makes high quality subwoofers for the Home Theater market. Their cheapest sub would embarass, crush and stomp any PC subwoofer. It would be like comparing a F350 to Golf cart.

I'm in the same situation .. just got a nice 5.1 home theater setup and the sub booms pretty good. I keep it about 1/3 volume .. fills in the music pretty nice, but not enough to rumble anything.

When I get a house, that baby is gonna crank. :)

Uhh well its not that I want to feel it because I think that would make it worse I just want to hear it. Plus it doesnt look like I could use that with the RCA connections.

Ya luck you! I used to live in a house way out in the desert so I used to eat sleep and drink my tunes.

I want to live my life as the respectable person that I can be so I want to give a good impression of me for the people here on the East Coast.

my logitech z680's have earned me unintentional noise complaints from as far as three floors away in my all concrete dorm. I havent cranked them too much, but at less than 50% sub power and 30% main power, I can get complaints from 5 floors away. The z680's are so bass biased I cant help it :(

z5300's are much better balanced.... oh well. Ive tried to talk to my neighbors about it but... its not like I can warn everyone :(

oh well, sucks to be them  :D
