Subwoofer recommendations?

  • Thread starter Thread starter

I have four Atoms for L, R, surround and a CC-170 center. Looking for a sub in the price range of the other speakers (< $120) with sound quality comparable to the others in my system. I don't know anything about Paradigm's sub products and they don't seem to have a Performance Series subwoofer.

Any recommendations from the HT crowd? WTB is another thing if you can help out.

Save up some and plan on spending a hell of a lot more than <$120.

For a sub? I don't really want to shake the walls. I just want the extra low channel.

Since everybody's suggesting DIY, I'll sell you my used Tempest and PE 250W amp for $200 plus shipping 😉 😀

Otherwise, if you want to stay within Paradigm, you're looking at the PDR-8 or 10. But like everyone else, I also suggest spending more on the sub.

I might hold off. I don't feel like going for DIY. Over $200 for a sub is crazy (for my usage).

dwell, 200$ wont get you much of a sub even for you useage, even if you get one at CC or BB it will cost you more then that, a Klipsch KSW-10in or Polk-PSW12 will cost at least 300 and they are pretty low end in terms of subs

we have both a KSW-10 and a PSW 12 in this house and they are both great for most things but for serious bass the SVS is king

I personally like Velodyne myself, but like the others it's more expensive than 120 or 200 bucks.

Without intruding on the thread too much, how do the Tempest subs compare to the Velodyne subs?

$120 is less than the least ammount of money you could ever spend on a sub.

You are going to have to make more room in your budget.

Really depends on what's in the Tempest...I went from a rather basic Tempest+250W amp adire alignment design to a Velodyne Digital Drive 12. There's no comparison for depth, control, integration...and it's only like a cubic foot, which was one of the biggest selling factors.

I went over to Costco and picked up a sub for about $100. Not that great, but it fills in the lows at least. I have pretty much the same speaker set-up as you, but have Titans instead of the Atoms as the mains.

It's such a shame to see people who nice setups who ruin it with a junk bottom end. 🙁

Paradigm are decent speakers..you need a decent sub!!!!

I guess I will hold off for a while. I don't plan on spending over $200 on the sub alone right now.

Definitely wait.

$200 will get you a decent bare driver, that's about it.

Viper GTS

For $120 you can go to Costco and get a $99 Sony sub. And it will sound like a Sony. Boomy, one-tone, nasty bass with a high-rolloff.

Save up dude.

I will probably end up going with the PDR-8 or PDR-10. Don't know the pricing on it. I think just under $300 for the PDR-8. Yipes.

id have to agree with everyone else... those speakers definitely arent shabby, if its the last part of your system shell out the extra bucks just to finish it off right. you definitely cant buy anything that would complement your setup for under 120.

if you buy something cheap, you'll regret it later. i was like that right with my sub... went budget the first time and regretted it until last week (when i finally shelled out the extra cash for a better one).

I purchased this a couple of weeks ago. It doesn't have the tremendous low end that I would like but it's got a good amount of power for my bedroom. I'm not exactly sure how it would compliment your Paradigms. I think my dad's Monitor 9s would over power it but that shouldn't surprise anyone.

I guess, if you feel that you absolutely have to get a sub right now, this wouldn't be a terrible way to go but I would recommend waiting to get something better.
