Subwoofer question...where should I put it in this room?

As you can see by this pic, I've currently got my subwoofer off to the right of my speakers in my setup. I'm thinking about moving it in-between the two couches (the blue & olive/greenish couches) in this pic.

Anyone know if this would be an improvement? The sub isn't always noticeable in movies; sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't, and I was thinking that putting it there (by one of the surrounds) might improve its impact, but I wasn't sure.

If I do this, I'll have to extend the cable -- it is a 12ft standard sub cable right now; would it be possible to extend this cable easily? Any advice?

thanks,
Rob :)

Not sure how much of a difference it would make, but you could easily extend the cable or pick up a longer one.

If you were to put it between the couches, it would be in the corner, right? Actually, that is an ideal spot for a subwoofer. To extend your sub cable, you can buy RCA female "barrell" connectors to extend the RCA cable. Just by one of the Radio Shack "gold" RCA cables to extend your current cable. Everything should be fine -- and you'll appreciate the extra bass.

Thanks wje, er, Tiles, er, Tiles2Tech, er...ah, whatever. :)

Tucking the sub away will also give the added benefit of freeing up some room there to put some more storage in the living room. :)

While I'm there, does anyone have advice for a good signal amplifier? I bought a splitter from Home Depot, and it worked, but then had to split the line again (for my ReplayTV), and now the local channels don't come in very well anymore, which means I get static when recording Scrubs. :(

Right now, I've got a 12' Monster Cable for my subwoofer cable. It's just a mono cable, which came with the Velodyne. Anyway, I'm wondering, since the Velo has stereo inputs (I know bass isn't in stereo), and my Denon (3802) has a single output for sub, what the best way to run about 25' of cable would be?

Should I plug the mono cable into the amp, run that to a Y-adapter to standard RCA, then extend the RCA cables?

I was at Radio Shack earlier, but they guys there couldn't help worth a damn, and I couldn't find exactly what I needed. I'm headed to Home Depot in a few minutes to look.

I take it you missed the link to Markertek in the other thread?

No, I posted that before I posted the other thread. Thanks for the link, but $800 is a bit out of my range for better local channel reception. I'm actually going to call up the local cable company and ask WTF is going on.

Not exactly sure how to extend your cable (not the greatest with that DIY stuff ), personally I'd probably just go buy a longer mono cable, but just a noname one. Don't need a monster one really. Got any local stereo shops? They can hook you up.

As for placement, a good way to find the best place in the room is to play something with a lot of bass so you can hear it constantly (music I guess) then crawl around the room on your knees and where the bass sounds best/loudest, put the sub near there. As a general rule, corners give you the loudest bass.

I moved it to the corner of the room, and really can notice the difference. Just tried it out with LOTR: FOTR, and the difference was unbelievable. I actually had to turn the volume down from 1/2 to about 30%. :D

Thanks for all the advice, guys! :D

Well I figure here's a good place for my subwoofer question.

Right now mine is against the wall, as I only have a 3 ft. cable, so it's near my receiver. There's probably only one viable corner I could put it in, but this is BEHIND the TV, and I'd have to place the sub on top of a 3 ft. high fridge. Do you think this would likely be better or worse than where it is now?

Put the sub where you sit.

Walk around the room and find the spot where the sub sounds best.

Put the sub there.

you need to put it at a corner

you need to drop the height of that center speaker

you need to rearrange your rears to ear level, facing the sofa

you need to upgrade to a 36" at least

:p

DON'T MOVE THE SUB!!!!!!!!

use the Y adapter on the sub. You get a very noticable volume difference on the Velodynes if you simply use the Y adapter. You go from "Why can't I hear bass" to "Damn, I didn't know my internal organs could do that" with 20 sec of effort.

Before you go though the trouble of moving stuff, try the Y adapter.

The one in the other link isn't as expensive.

The rears are at ear level. I'll see what I can do about the center; I'm not sure how I'd go about re-arranging it, but everything sounds nice now.

Tilt your center channel downwards at least. It's the most important speaker to have pointing at ear level IMO.

My girlfriend is throwing a fit about moving it from the top to the middle, but I'm going to do it. :)
