Subwoofer - Leave on or turn off?

Hey guys,

I just got my new home theater system (Samsung HT-AS720) and everything is setup and running great.

I was just wondering if I should be turning off the subwoofer power amp when the home theater system is not in use, or is it ok to just leave it powered on all the time? I am turning off the receiver unit when not in use, but as for now, I have been leaving the subwoofer powered all the time.

Thanks for the help.

Lol, I just asked the same question in my thread about my computer's Logitech speaker subwoofer tripping my battery backup. My subwoofer has a built in amp that hums considerably, so I'm concerned if thats normal and a reason to turn it off when not in use. I didn't get an answer yet but I'll post here if you don't get a response first.

Anyone know how much electricity an amp uses while turned on and idle?

I've had my sub left on for about 4 years now. It may be a waste of electricity, but it hasn't hurt anything.

Yea, I would think it would be fine, but the only thing that has me worried is that it seems like the humming coming from the back of the amp on the sub increases in volume after a few days, and one time my surge protector told me it was being overloaded by beeping after a few days of leaving it on...I'm not sure if it was coincidence or not but it had never done it before, and never since turning it off every night. Anybody else with a logitech sub ever experience that?

Sounds like some kind of ground issue maybe?

My sub doesn't make any hum noise when left idle.

I'm just worried about it drawing power when the system is not in use or any possible damage to the woofer if left on all the time.

Does the sub have a standby option? Mine goes to standby when not in use. Once it receives a signal, it turns itself on.

Computer speakers are notorious for this, yours is quite a step above a Logitech system. The gains on the amplifiers are set high to give the illusion of loudness, so any noise whatsoever is picked up, or the cables are picking up noise. Or people forget to mute their mic input in the volume control panel. ;)

It does not have a standby, I wish it did though. Its a somewhat older 4.1 Logitech system, I think its 280 watts and was quite expensive 5 years ago when I bought it for over $100 bux. It sounds FANTASTIC, the subwoofer hum and having to flip it off down on the floor is the only thing that is annoying. Which is why I'd rather not get rid of it if that hum is normal.

Oh I mean the hum is actually coming from the subwoofer amp itself.
