Obviously not the brightest bulb. And possibly in need of attention. The trouble with unstable people like this guy Is it takes very little to set them off, THEN later.... they regret it. Just ask any Trumpie insurrectionist how that works.

Reagan said we didn't need to worry about it anymore, 40 years ago, and shuttered some 70% of our mental health capacity. more than half of this country believed him. Republicans pay lip service to needing it now, but they obviously don't care, because they gleefully voted to end it and quite clearly support the notion that it is unneeded.

Since then we have a runaway homelessness problem and crazies allthefuckover the place now voting for an Orange man to turn this country into Nazi Dreamland 2.

From what I have read of him, the man fits a typical profile of a hard life. In a country where people likely looked down upon / told him to !@#$ off. Instead of offering him the means to find comfort, he was instead squared away into a corner of pain and he shared that pain with us on the subway.

People in hell want company. That was his motive. To make us feel what he feels.

What no one gets is that the reason no one gets it is because no one wants to get it. The people who could do anything to improve mental health will work to insure that the changes needed to make that happen never do because they are the ones whose status in the sick system is the result of the fact they are the most successful at being mentally ill.

I agree - so far this one does sound like a "mental health" related thing. But it also seems to demonstrate how entwinned that is with social factors. On what's been reported so far, this guy sounds to have been chronically angry about a very confused mixture of political and personal issues, experience of racism being among them.

I wonder if his being able to give voice to it on social media, as apparently he had been doing, actually just made it worse? It's commonly acknowledged that _consuming_ such media can be "radicalising" and spread mad beliefs, but I wonder whether it also works the other way, i.e. that the more you give voice to such feelings and thoughts the more intense they can become within you?

Makes me wonder about the effect of social media and forums and the like on everyone, including myself.

But it's the availabity of guns that make it possible for people in such a state to do tremendous damage. If guns were as readily available here as over there, I am quite sure Brits would be going off like this on a pretty regular basis.
 
Fox News blames liberal social media for this guy and the shooting. Hey Fox, how about placing the blame where it truly belongs, a gun happy nation owned and operated by the gun nuts. Gee... ya think a gun might have has a little to do with this? Facebook or youtube can not shoot a bullet.

No one wants to address the huge disparity in health and mental care between the rich and the poor, Blacks and Whites, Citizens and those who are undocumented.

We're always going to have an easy availability of firearms.

It is such a shame. And I am grateful no one died.
 
This crap reminds me of that Long Island RR shooting in 1993 and the way NYC was when Abe Beame and Ed Koch were running the show. It was chaos on the streets compared even to now.

I was a courier mainly in NYC in the late 1980's/early 1990's and crime was out of freaking control back then... like walk away 10 feet from your locked vehicle and they're smashing the window out of control.

I saw shootings, stabbings (including a hotdog guy on Central Park West) several muggings, had my truck robbed multiple times, saw people $hitting on the street all the time and the "joyful" culmination of my "career" was the 1993 WTC bombing.

We don't want that kind of "Wild West" environment in NYC ever again.

Things like bail reform are well and good (and overdue) BUT there needs to be some common sense applied so people who do the same violent crap over and over STAY locked up while folks who screw up once or twice get another chance.

No joke we used to drive right down into that same 24-hour garage where the bomber went with his van and park, then go out and party half the night and stagger back down the ramp stone-drunk right past "security" (usually asleep or MIA completely) at the crack of dawn.

Occasionally I would go out on a week-night and in order to make my early AM Wall Street pickups I would sleep in my truck IN the "secure" garage.

Best picture I could find... and yes the place was a mess.

People were occasionally robbed in the hallways of both main towers and every office door was locked nearly as tightly as a street-door... not shocking with near-direct elevator-access from the PATH train station to the upper floors it was almost like being ON the street! (And remember what I said about the streets!)

In retrospect its surprising that place wasn't destroyed by some lunatic sooner then it was. If the 93 guy hadn't been a moron at least the North tower (#1) would have come down in 93.

Hate to say it but you couldn't pay me enough to work in the Freedom Tower ... I knew several folks who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald and didn't make it out on 9/11.

Thank goodness Giuliani showed up and cleaned up all the criminals, the goofy lax laws and enforcement and made NYC safe again. If you watch movies from the 1970s depicting NYC, its not a place you would want to be at night.

Too bad liberalism is back in vogue and criminals are running amok again nationwide.

The decline began well before Rudy in Dinkin's term, following national trends. Rudy takes credit for something he had little to do with.

I might be more sympathetic to more pretrial detentions if trials happened more speedily and corrections departments didn't run their jails like shit. NYCDOC is almost totally incompetent/corrupt but protected by insanely powerful unions. Riker's is an absolute shit show that's probably going to get taken over by the Feds soon.
