Substitutes for oatmeal?

I tried eating oatmeal and the mushy texture just made me gag. Is there anything I can substitute in place of oatmeal that is just as filling and just as healthy?

Or

Is there something that can possibly make the texture not as watery?

Would it be possible to blend the oatmeal into a fine powder and just dump it into a protein drink? Would it have the same effect as eating it whole?

try steel cut oatmeal. most people love it who don't like the texture of regular oatmeal. i enjoy mine w/a little coconut milk. it reminds me of eating this 3 bean drink sold at most asian restaurants. by the way, you can get it at whole foods or similar stores in the bulk section for about 89cents a pound

Not sure if serious bodybuilders would approve of this but......

I eat the quaker oatmeal non sugar stuff (read: splenda). Anyways, to make it good, you add about a cup of water and microwave it until it puffs up. Let it puff up until it almost comes out of the bowl. Pause. Stir. Microwave. Let it puff up two more times. Now you have delicious oatmeal :)

I hate hot oatmeal with it's sticky texture. Instead I do the following:

1 cup milk
1/2-1 cup water
1 scoop protein powder
1/2 tablespoon olive oil
1/2-1 cup of oatmeal

Dump in all in a shaker. Shake it and chug it. You can leave it sit for 15 minutes if you like it a little softer too. You don't even need to chew it if you're good.

WOW, you're good.

I hadn't even thought about that! I was looking for a way to possibly just swallow it all lol.

lol - ya, you can skip the protein and/or olive oil if you like. But I find this to be a good way to get a lot of good carbs and fiber without eating a bowl of nasty oatmeal for 20 minutes. It takes forever to choke down 1 cup of that stuff when it's heating and sticky. Be aware though, you may want to start with 1/2 cup or make sure you let it soak for a while. Your stomach may pass it rather quickly if you aren't used to a lot of semi-raw oats ;) - I usually mix one up at night and leave in the fridge. In the morning I put a small bit of hot water in it so it isn't freezing cold and chug it :)

I eat mine cold with milk and either raisins or a banana. If I'm eating it without fruit I'll add a dash of splenda.

is oatmeal known to be good for bodybuilders or something? if so, why? it doesn't seem to have *that* much protein, so is it the fiber?

fiber, carbs, and it's just another source of protein to combine with the other sources. It's good to get a lot of protein from a couple sources, versus all your protein from supplements.

Would it be okay if I blended it up into a fine powder and just dumped it into my protein drink? Would it have the same benefits as eating it whole?

From what I've read, it might digest a little quicker but overall ya, it's fine. I actually hear of a lot of people who use a coffee grinder to grind the stuff up and just store it back in the containert ground like that.

Rolled oats (the flat ones that we're used to seeing in instant oatmeal - think Quaker - are flattened with a big roller and the husk is removed. That removes a lot of the fiber from it.

The bulk stuff from Whole Foods is good. The organic steel cut oatmeal cereals that are sold in boxes seem to make my shake too foamy.

to those who think it tastes bad, are you using salt? I use a little salt, and a mix of milk and water. Usually tastes great and I don't even need to put sugar in it.

What's the deal with weight lifting and oatmeal?

Is it for protein? Most other whole grains are loaded with protein as well. I eat it just for its all-around healthiness.

that sounds so gross :p I assume it doesn't have the awful smell inside of a fish oil capsule.

I don't like instant oatmeal either, I do often eat steel cut Irish or scottish oatmeal, or non instant oatmeal.

If you want oatmeal so bad, oatmeal bars are good and come in lots of variety from nutrigrain style bars, to more homemade rougher style with dried fruits. I also used to drink an oatmeal protein drink. It was a powder to mix with milk (I used soy or almond milk).

Ditto. I hate how people complain about how oatmeal tastes bad, or how creatine tastes bad, or how bad their protein shake tastes, or how bad cottage cheese/tuna sucks ass, blah blah blah. It's not that bad.
