Subscribing to threads

Can there not be an option to "subscribe to thread" added to the quick response box?
And lets say I do respond to a thread using the standard method... what if I forget to click "subscribe". How do I go back and subscribe then? I either have to post again in the thread or edit my original post?

 
You can open the thread and select the Topic Tools button near the top right.

That allows you to selection an option
