Ok, question.

1) If you have windows 2000 server, what would be the point of having a router if 2000 handles DHCP?

2) what is the point of having routers and switches connected together on the same network? What is the advantage?

3) If I have my 2000 server set up to have multiple subnets, how do i tell "these computers over here" to have this subnet, and "those over there" to have that subnet?

BTW, I hope you know the difference between a switch and a router, as it doesn't seem to me that you do.

== You could use Windows 2000 Server as a "router", if that floats your boat, but it's really only an ethernet router. Try plugging your ISDN, Frame Rellay, or T1 into it 🙂

== They perform different functions, that's why. You need a router if you want to reach networks that aren't on your local network. Routers create broadcast domains, and use logical Network addresses( IP address, IPX address, etc). Switches create collision domains, and use MAC addresses. I could go on and on, but...

thanks nomeanmugs and pcmark, i know about the pools but how does the computer know to grab which pool? I know there are classes and vendor types you can specify, but is that the only way of doing it? it seems like it.

maybe i need to read more about the difference between routers and switches. my knowledge of the difference between the two so far is, routers can dish out ip addresses and share the net, and switches are faster and use mac addresses.
