For a Cisco test today, I believe ip subnet-zero is assumed to be configured as it's the default for all current routers. So first and last subnets are ok to use.

OP, I would ask this on one of the cisco forums for verification.
Yep, Cisco exams assume that the zero subnet is the first usable subnet.
