Submitting Resumes

Does submitting resumes online work? What other way is there for a company to notice you instead of just being added into a huge database? To walk into the HQ and leave a resume with the secretary of the person in charge? Thanks.

If it were a very large company, I'd say you have a better chance with submitting on-line, because they will search all resumes for key words. If you submit it by hand, there is a great chance that it will be filed away. At a small company it won't matter as much. These companies may use headhunters to fill a lot of positions, on the mistaken belief that the headhunter will do the legwork in weeding out unqualified applicants.

It's really all about who you know, and getting referred. Many companies will pay their employees a bonus for referring a qualified person who is then hired (the company I work for will pay me $6000 for such a referral (although I'm not sure if this is still in effect with the current economic situation)). If you're sending in an unsolicited resume, it's much more of a long shot to get that first interview.
