Can someone please explain all the subdivisions in the army i.e. platoon/company/battalion/division etc. and how many troops they are made of and what each one consists of?

also, if someone could explain the ranks in an organized manner: leutiant, major, general, etc..

I hear all these terms on TV and I don't have a good feel for what this means.

Please someone explain it in an organized, comprehensive way. Or point me to a link which does so.

Thanks.

Many members of the Army listen to Rush. They are a great band. In addtion to the Signals album, 2112 was also a classic.

Squad, Platoon, Company, Battalion, Regiment, Brigade, Division, Corp, Army (from smallest to biggest). Numbers vary - squad tends to be 8-12, platoon 40-50, company about 200, battalion about 1000, reg. 2-3000, brigade about 5000, division about 10-15,000 and up. I am just pulling those numbers from deep memory but they should be close.

Ranks (Officers): 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lt. Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General, General, General of the Army (from lowest rank up to 5 stars for the last). Again from memory but hopefully good enough.

Should we throw in the different branches? Chief Petty Officer, Seaman, Master Gunnery Sgt., Specialist(US Army), Tech Sgt., the list goes on and on. It is pretty easy to figure out though.

Navy enlisted

E1- Seaman Recruit (SR) (DPSR)
E2- Seaman Apprentice (SA) (DPSA)
E3- Seaman (SN) (DPSN)
E4- Petty Officer 3rd Class (PO3) (DP3)
E5- Petty Officer 2nd Class (PO2) (DP2)
E6- Petty Officer 1st Class (PO1) (DP1)
E7- Chief Petty Officer (CPO) (DPC)
E8- Senior Chief Petty Officer (SCPO) (DPCS)
E9- Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO) (DPCM)

The abbreviations are general. In practice though, the rank is preceded by the rate (job) of the person. I was a Data Processing Technician in the Navy. The second column in parenthesis shows the ranks of a DP person.

Navy officer

O1- Ensign
O2- Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG)
O3- Lieutenant
O4- Lieutenant Commander
O5- Commander
O6- Captain
O7- Rear Admiral (lower half)
O8- Rear Admiral (upper half)
O9- Vice Admiral
O10- Admiral
O11- Fleet Admiral * (not used since WWII)

Also, there are Limited Duty Officers (LDO) and Chief Warrant Officers (CWO) that are both former enlisted, and they are specialists (officers are generalists). The selection board for LDO and CWO can begin when an E6 has enough time-in-grade for Chief Petty Officer.

Limited Duty Officers can only be in certain specialties.

O1E- Ensign
O2E- LTJG
O3E- LT
04E- LCDR
O5E- CDR

Warrant Officers can only be in certain specialties also.

WO1- Warrant Officer 1
CWO2- Chief Warrant Officer 2
CWO3- Chief Warrant Officer 3
CWO4- Chief Warrant Officer 4

This is probably more info than wanted, but because the Navy rank structure is different, I felt it should be told.
