Which the NA 2.5 or the Turbo WRX, or Turbo STI. The STI is the EJ257 block which is beefy and strong as heck, but there is a semi-large issue with ringlands failing. The WRX block is the EJ255 which we have seen on the Baja turbo (I think not too much info on this motor yet). The NA EJ25 is tried and trued and been around since 2000 and is strong as heck and great and torquey but it does have high compression and is terrible for aftermarket turbo.

the non turboed one, Theres a turbo in my car now and I don't like having to drive the car easy in the last 2 minutes to cool off the turbo and I don't really care that I have to use premium now but in a few months I'll be doing a LOT of driving for my new job.

so do you think the new engine will have any problems or should I go with the older model for the sure thing.

What is the reliability of Subaru compare to say, a corolla and civic? I am about to buy a car next year and Legacy regular is on my list, like the feature, ok with the look, want to try boxer engine and AWD, but am afraid of reliability, fuel economy, and etc.

Reliability is comparable.
Fuel economy is slightly worse but you get AWD and generally more horsepower and handling/performance.
Boxer engine is smoother, particularly at cruising, due to superior balance compared to inline-4's.

The Legacy is actually more comparable, class-wise, to a Camry or an Accord.

AWD will mean you sacrifice some fuel economy but overall you should have decent economy with the 2.5i. I can get about 27 on the highway using cruise so I'm sure the NA version should definitely get close to 30.

Subarus rank very high reliability wise. I never hesitated when in buying a Subaru. They're just more of a niche market car.

Fuel economy with the turbo engines is uh, not great. If you keep your foot out of it you can get 25-28mpg. But you'll never keep your foot out of it, so expect 19-23mpg.

No other engine screams DRIVE THE HELL OUT OF ME quite like the Subaru turbos. You can only resist for so long.

So so true. My EJ20 turbo is like a slut it likes to be ridden so hard so often. And no guilt either. It "enjoys" it so much it's like you're not even riding it hard, but just driving it the way it was meant to be driven. I mean, jeez, driving it slow is like holding it back, and you feel bad doing that. You can almost hear the engine bitching you out for being light on the gas and shifting early. At all times you can hear the engine saying, "Give me the boost, give me the boost, give me the boost! Oh that's it, spank me, spank me, spa..."



I'm telling you, it's obscene...

What tranny issues? Did you break it?

Turbo lag is fixed easy enough with uppipe/downpipe and a reflash, plus better driving techniques. (In the immortal words of Shelby, "If you get turbo lag, that's because you're in the wrong gear").

Sorry to see you leave the fold, but my old Acura had a weaker tranny and worse "lag" from its VTEC than does my WRX.

I haven't broken the tranny, but not being able to downshift to 1st at 5mph is just poor design. I shouldn't have to double clutch to accomplish something like this. 2nd gear is too long also.
