or you don't live in NY?

Lots of snow in NY this year, I do not live in NY. There has been no snow here in the South this winter, what a rip-off. The main reason I want the Forester is because it is very subtle, very solid, Subaru reliability, great interior and is very practical. It is great for day to day driving, or I think it is.

I was considering other options before, such as pricey cars like the TL, G35 or something like that. Then I was thinking, why spend that much money? So I considered the Rav4, CR-V, Ford Escape and other car-like smallish SUVs. I ended up liking the Subaru the most because it is the least girliest out of all of them and is generally a better SUV.

Your opinions are needed.

The Forester is a good little SUV. I like something with AWD that can handle weather or go on off-road type stuff....but I hate the HUGE SUV's.

But yeah it handles well and grips good.

Also, check out the Toyota 4Runner. It's a bit bigger but still decent gas mileage etc.

I considered the Highlander, 4Runner but I think I believe that the Forester is a better overall vehicle and probably more sporty. Plus, it is not a Toyota. I understand that Toyota makes great quality cars, but they just don't do it for me.

I was looking at the specs of the Forester and it really is a smallish SUV, but that is not a bad thing. Also, the AWD is a plus.

Yeah I like the Forester.

Right now I have a 97 Maxima. It's an excellent car and has done very well. 125K Miles and very little work done to it other than normal maintenance.

But the Maxima won't go on dirt roads very well...and when I was in Death Valley I couldn't go to a few places I wanted because I would have needed higher clearance.

I would look at a Forester or Jeep....I don't know what the clearance on a Forester is though. A used Jeep Grand Cherokee would be nice. Only problem is that Jeeps typically cost more to maintain from what I hear.

Yes, I want it new. Or maybe I should wait for the 2007 design change?

If I'm not mistaken, Subaru is supposed to completely redesign the Forester in 2007. Hmmmm ... what to do ... :)

Just get brush guards, fog lamps and tint the rear windows. Some grey or black plastic aftermarket over-fenders at the top of each wheel well (like on the Toyota and Nissan 4x4 trucks) should help bulk out the look also.

Its never really been a girly car. Since its early days, its always outpowered and outperformed its primary rivals. (remember when the Honda CRV only made 126 hp).
Nowadays the "god-like" Rav4 overpowers anything in this segment, but its only temporary until the various automakers catch up. However with limited rav4 v6s approaching 30+K, the forester respresents a far better value.

Few cars drive as well as Subarus do. I demo most of their model line (usually for a few weeks during the winter) and they make excellent, fun-to-drive and reliable cars. With their GTs, they also have the hp and performance to rival some much more expensive cars.

My main concern with the Subaru brand has been its lack of focus with its mainstream products. For example, the forester has neither the command seating position nor roomy backseat that people demand in this category. Its not quite an SUV and oddly proportioned for a wagon. Its not a sports sedan and will never have the prowess of the "real" Sti (though there is a forester sti on the way)

I say get the Forester GT version and enjoy it for what it is. If you want something bigger, get the Tribeca. If you want a sport sedan, the Sti is available. NASIOC is a great resource for all things Subaru, as is the townhall over at edmunds.

The smallest car in existance has space for enough NOS tanks to blow several engines, so it's a non-issue.

I believe the first mistake you can make when it comes to Subarus is to try and fit them into predefined "categories." They have a car that's a little bit bigger than a station wagon, and a car that's a little bit smaller than an SUV. It happens to be that these sizes fit a shocking number of people. The Forester has the cargo capacity that most people buy an SUV for, but without the rollover happiness, craptacular mileage, and hippie hatred that one would get when buying a "traditional" SUV. The Legacy is a nice, practical station wagon, except it's got some power, and doesn't inspire ridicule like other station wagons.

Why are you concerned if ATOT thinks it's 'manly' or 'girly'. Do you like the body style? Do you like the interior? Does the vehicle do what you need it to do (off-road capabilities, AWD, cargo capacity, whatever)? Is it at a price that you can afford? If you answered 'yes' to those questions, then buy it.

i drove a rental liberty and i was really impressed. if it wasn't a chrysler product (i've about had it with my cherokee and it's problems) i'd probably buy one.

Correction, Forester XT is will still blow past a RAV4, V6 or not;)

Besides, the Forester had almost limitless possibilities for power upgrades;) Spend a grand and you'll have 300hp easy!

Rav4 v6 - 269 hp.
Forester XT - 230 hp.

I'd watch out for those Toyota's if I were you....

C/D TEST RESULTS

2006 Toyota RAV4 Limited 4WD V-6
60 mph: 6.3
100 mph: 17.0
Standing 1/4-mile: 14.9 sec @ 94 mph

2006 Subaru Forester 2.5XT Limited
60 mph: 5.9 sec
100 mph: 15.8 sec
Standing 1/4-mile: 14.3 sec @ 96 mph

The older '210hp' Foresters were actually even faster, with their more aggressive gearing. I think some may have done high 13s stock. I'd watch out for those Foresters if I were you - especially if they have exhaust and/or ECU/tuning done.

I really like this SUV and am considering one.

It is very popular with male homosexuals. I see lots of adverts for it in the gay press.

The RAV4 is a tall poser crossover SUV. The Forester is a wagon. I'd rather have the wagon.
