Subaru developing turbo for the brz

Based on how many turbocharged boxer engines Subaru currently uses in its cars, solid news of a force-fed BRZ was only a matter of time. So it comes as little surprise that Automotive News is reporting that Subaru is currently developing a turbocharged version of the 2.0-liter engine currently found under the hood of the much-loved but somewhat underpowered 2013 BRZ.

AN's unnamed sources indicate that this engine will use a twin-scroll turbocharger and a new direct-injection system that will help give the engine an estimated 280 horsepower and torque that could be in excess of 250 pound-feet... still being sent to the rear wheels. The turbo'd BRZ will reportedly be making its debut for the 2014 model year, but it isn't clear if Subaru will simply call the car a BRZ Turbo or if it will finally deliver the BRZ STI that many enthusiasts have been clamoring for since the BRZ STI Concept hit the scene in 2011.

As soon as we know more, so will you.

This would be awesome and if I lived someplace that didn't snow, would be at the top of my test drive list.

Companies need to start giving their cars real names again instead of meaningless initials. I read the headline as "Subaru developing turbo for the lulz"

Well...technically...it's not meaningless. It stands for Boxer Rear-drive Zenith.....

They could be lying, but...

SUBARU BRZ POWERPLANT; IS SUBARU DEVELOPING A NEW TURBOCHARGER AND DIRECT-INJECTION SYSTEM FOR THE 2.0 LITER ENGINE?
October 22, 2012 5:58 PM EDT | By Danny Choy

Back in August, we reported that Subaru tuner garage Accelerated Performance unveiled an in-house turbokit for the Subaru BRZ, effectively bumping its power output to 278-hp at the wheel.

Now, Subaru is reportedly developing a turbo for the 2.0 liter Boxer engine that is based on the BRZ. The new turbocharged powerplant will use a twin-scroll turbo system and a Subaru-sourced straight direct injection system rather than the D4S direct and port fuel injection technology from Toyota. According to reports from Automotive News, the new 2.0 liter engine could stand to make as much as 280-hp and 250 lb.-ft. of torque.

While its certainly based on the BRZ engine, Subaru denies the new turbocharged variant will be found in any future BRZ. Subaru spokesman Dominick Infante said bluntly, "We have no plans to offer a turbocharged BRZ."

While it would certainly be exciting to see a more powerful model of the wildly popular front-engine rear-wheel-drive sports car, we kind of agree with Subaru's decision given the price hike the performance upgrade entails.

Other models in the Subaru lineup that may possibly benefit the new turbocharged 2.0 liter engine include a next-generation Subaru Impreza WRX, which will debut at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show.

I agree with the logic that it will bump the price up, but I feel like the 200hp aspect of the car is what's keeping a lot of people from wanting to buy it. Subaru has always made very good performing cars and were never really considered to be "affordable" compared to other brands that offered a bit less performance.

I still think though that they are right in that it probably won't come out on the BRZ. Seems like it's aimed at the next WRX in hopes to get its MPG up. It'd just be too expensive to slap that in an already some what expensive car.

no doubt we will see a turbo variant of the car sometime in the future. IMHO, it is just a matter of how much it will cost.

Subaru is going to make one for sure. They just don't want to cannibalize sales until then.

Why blatantly lie until then? If a potential customer who has been holding out for a TC version sees them deny a TC version, then goes out and buys a competitor's car, Subaru has kind of shot themselves in the foot.

Because when they're ready to announce it, they'll announce it. companies learned long ago that announcing your future plans long before you have anything to show for it is askin to handing your business model to a competitor. It might not be a big deal in this case to let some info out, and sometimes leaking some pertinent info is good marketing strategy, but most companies hold a hard and fast rule about not divulging lots of information until they're close to market with something. Once you start confirming shit before it's ready for prime time, you're committed to it and have to deal with a public flip-flop if plans change in the end.

Even if it's the the same price as entry level WRX, I will still buy the BRZ STi for the styling and handling.

I have a feeling that this is going to be in the STi's price range. Awesome nonetheless but hopefully it won't price itself out of the market.

That's just not realistic. A hypothetical BRZ STi will be $30k+, easily. WRX starts at $25.6k. BRZ starts at the same price. The WRX is already turbo as well, so a BRZ turbo might well be $35k+.

A turbo BRZ is easily 30. I would easily pay 30 for a turbo BRZ.

That being said, we've yet to see it. The turbo engine is confirmed, but it's for the legacy and WRX. There's no proof it will be in the BRZ.

Bigger wheels, grippier rubber, better brakes, more sporty seats, more advanced suspension, better differential, different 6spd manual trans (no automatic offered)

$33 - $35K -

The real question - will it out run a 3.5L Camry SE in a straight line?

That's actually questionable. It needs to have less than say 12 lbs/hp to have a good acceleration run (camry does 14.3s with 268 hp at around 3300 lbs). Which means it should have at least 250hp with good torque and transmission. Should be attainable if they don't mess it up.

Hell, I'm like --| |-- close to buying a BRZ or FR-S and doing the upgrade myself.

Actually, I think it would be out of my league, technically, but I do have a kick-ass mechanic that's reasonable on big jobs.

Edit: *spooge*

As the article you linked mention, there is no evidence of a turbo in that picture.

" However, Subie's signature turbo hood scoop is missing on this prototype so it may still be naturally aspirated"
