I am sure it's important to get them replaced if there is something wrong with them, but the 60K mile spark plug change sounds like the 3K mile oil change to me.

Nope. Tighter gap, higher pressure, higher temperature, higher ignition demands, and usually copper plugs that don't last much past 10k-20k miles
It's not the mechanic getting that money. He'll get maybe $20/hr.
30 minutes a plug? At that rate per plug, my car would take 8 hours to change. geez.
By that I meant it never was in a repair facility. All maintenance (as little as there was) was done by me.
