Subaru dealer wants $920 for Service inspection!!!

I know a Mechanics kid has to eat too but my local Subaru dealer wanted to charge me $920 for the following:

Spark plugs
Brakes/Differential/manual transmission fluid flush
Coolant flush
Fuel injection cleaning system
And front wheel allignment.

I find this absolutely crazy! I can do. Everything but the allignment and spark plug change (1plug is a hassle to get to on boxer engines)

Am I being absurd not wanting to pay that or should I let the mechanics kids eat and pay for their trust fund next week?

Is that including consumables? That doesn't sound very high to me for a dealership.

If you can do the work, why complain about the price? Do what you can and pay for what you cannot?

Yeesh, I was quoted $995 for a timing belt service on my Forester. I assume this is your 60k service? What exactly is the "fuel injection cleaning system"?

Alignment shouldn't be more than ~$60. Diff/trans fluid is really easy (did mine in the driveway on ramps). Brakes shouldn't be hard either, just easier with two people. Coolant flush is easy (I'd just drain/fill), but if you've had your timing and water pump replaced (105k), it may have been done then. The only PITA is spark plugs...not sure if you have to raise the motor up a little to get to them, but in my Forester I think all I have to do is get the right extensions/u-joints (and pull the windshield washer fluid reservoir).

2.1 hours to do those plugs book time. Ouch

Is the turbo in the way making that 4th spark plug so hard to get at? I had an 06 Legacy wagon 2.5SE (no turbo) and was able to change plugs in 1/2 hour. Had the car for 87,000 miles and it never seen any mechanic......Just sayin!

I consider myself a novice when it comes to working on cars and I changed the plugs in my sti in under an hour. It's not that bad as long as you have a ratchet extension set

Title is a little misleading.

But sounds spot on. Most 30k on any car starts around $500 and 60-100k is about $1000 at dealerships.

Infiniti wanted. $550. For brake flush, oil change, rotation. Rear different only.

The turbo isn't in the way at all. On our turbos (LGT (sold) and WRXs), I remove the airbox, battery and on the WRX move the washer reservoir. Makes life much easier.

that should be about $350 max at a dealership. try calling nissan, honda service centers around the area to see if they can work on your subaru. mine here does

I change the sparkplugs twice a year on my STI, takes 45 minutes max. Just need the correct combination of extensions. Thats it. Dont screw around, pull the battery and airbox and its easy.

Just did all fluids on mine last week. Took a little less than an hour to do oil/trans/diff. Fluids are cheap. Brakes (at least on my STI) are super simple (thanks Brembo). Rad fluid if you want to change yourself get the correct funnel and its a breeze.

$950 doesnt seem bad for an in and out though.

Why are you doing this? I have a performance car and the scheduled time is 105k miles for spark plug replacement. Do they just foul the plugs that quickly?

In general? No, the replacement interval is very long. I have a fairly heavily modified application. I run copper plugs, and they tend to foul quickly.

To answer the OP's questions, it's the fluid flushes and fuel system cleaning that they're raking you over the coals on. Also their alignment is probably close to $100.

On some Subaru's, you need a special socket to pull the trans/diff plugs. Other than that, all that labor is pretty straight forward. But it is the money maker for the dealerships.

Heh, I bought that socket because I was supposed to need it.

I should've looked first...because I didn't. 😛

Yeah I'm gonna do all the fluid changes myself. When it comes to the plugs I've only worked on inline 4s and 6s so Everything was front of me.

I got three weeks to do all this before I move. Rather get this out of the way and focus on new location

They are super easy. I use one short and one medium extension, it gets very tight but you can usually start with the medium extension, break the plug free, get it out a bit, switch to the short extension, finish by hand. Really does not take that long at all.
