Sub uses regular speaker wire connectors, receiver uses the RCA style plug

So I want to buy a new entry level receiver for my apartment and would like to reuse my existing 5.1 speakers from my HTIB.

The reason I want to buy a new receiver is to be able to decode Dolby Digital and DTS, whereas my old HTIB "receiver" can't.

Most of the entry level receivers I've been looking at use the RCA style jack for the sub but my sub uses the regular speaker wire connector (what is that called?)

I live in an apartment where sound easily travels through walls, so I don't mind the power of my current set of speakers since I can't really pump it up anyways.

Are there any options for me or do I need to replace my speakers as well then?

It sounds like your sub isn't powered. You'll need a sub amp of some sort before you can use it with your receiver. I'd just get a new sub unless you have an amp sitting around unused

If your HTIB "receiver" still functions and has analog audio inputs, you could use that as the amplifier for your passive sub.

You'd need to connect the subwoofer pre-out of a new receiver to one of the analog audio inputs on the HTIB "receiver". Then hook up the subwoofer to the HTIB "receiver" like normal. You could then adjust the gain on the subwoofer by using the volume control on the HTIB "receiver".

I dont think he should use the volume control on the htib receiver. He should set it to no gain no reduction (normally 0) and then set the stage in his new receiver.

If the level at 0 on the HTIB receiver works with whatever trim levels available on the new receiver, then he could certainly do that. I don't know if that's going to work out though?

The volume level on the HTIB receiver would just be another way to adjust the subwoofer to get the right output level anyway.

I'm just saying I would have that thing zeroed out with no reduction or gain then you only need the 1 remote. anytime you have several gain stages you always run into the problem of one being jacked up and the other really low then another set in the middle. All your doing is messing up your noise floor. Also you would have no idea what the right output level for the sub is without sending pink noise through the system and pinking it in relation to the other speakers. Infact now that I think about it if you want to be critical then you should pink the whole set up and make sure that you arent padding or amping at the htib stage. that's probably not necessary as by having the gain at 0 you should be within 1 or 2db.
