Hey Anandtechers
I would like your opinion on the performance of my computer.
Ive done searches on the Internet and found similar or lesser systems getting much higher framerates and such than this computer.

Celeron D 355 @ Stock 3.33Ghz / 256kb L2 Cache
ATi x800xl AGP 256mb
1gb DDR Ram

Some benchmarks I ran:

Max Detail
Battlefield 1942 32vs32, Bocage
Average- 35fps

Unreal Tournament 1999, 8vs8 , Lava Giant
Average- 120fps

These benchmarks are I think exceptionally low for this computer, despite its el cheapo status.

Heat issues can I thinkbe ruled out, the Celeron D Idles at 38-40c and gets up to about 50c under heavy load. The x800xl idles at 40-45c and gets to about 55c under load.

All help would be greatly appreciated, and don't hestitate for ask for any information iv'e probably forgotten.

Thanks :)

You've found systems benchmarked with a celeron? I don't know if it makes that much of a diffrence anyway though. What size PSU and what mobo do u have?

Battlefield 2 will lag at max detail with 1 gig of RAM, but that's mostly because it's badly programmed.

Yea Bf1942, this computer currently wouldn't have a hope in hell of playing BF2.
I believe this computer has an ASUS P5V800-MX motherboard, a cheap mobo for a cheap computer. You think this could be the source of the problem?

I don't see why not isn' the pentuim D somewhat compared to like a pentuim 4? or a Pentuim M

besides gaming is gpu dependent I have an X800XL and I play Bf2 fine.....

Celeron D, but your right in saying that gaming is somewhat GPU dependant and im pretty sure an x800xl isnt usually such a slouch.

For the games you are playing this Celeron should be equal or better than a C2D for today's games. Dude you are playing games which are over 5yrs old, maybe even 7-8yrs, what you have is equivalent to 7900GTX Quad SLI + C2D @ 3GHz, and probably something much much much much more than that.

It would be more accurate to do 3D Mark and new games.

wtf?

his celeron D doens't compare to a Core 2 Duo even if the games are blank years old what he has isn't equal to 7900GTX Quad SLI + C2D @ 3GHz or more than that.

I understand what your trying to say but your comparison isn't correct

what he ment to say is that the games you play are old and your computer surpasses there requirment/recommended hardware greatly and you should have no problems.

Edit: akshayt please don't take it offensive as I didn't mean it to sound like that <3

Well I have a 3dmark2001 result of about 13000 and the newest game I have is probably Joint Ops: Typhoon Rising in which I get about 20fps.
The thing is this machine is getting low framerates despite the games being 5 years old, quite unusual.

I have a question about the other systems that you compared your system to just to make sure your comparing them to systems that are actually good comparsions to yours just in case.

Well I saw a 2.93Ghz Celeron with a Nvidia 6800 and 1gb Ram getting 200+ fps in UT2003, whereas this thing isnt getting that in the 1999 version. I will try and find the benchmark and post the link.

Ok, I obtained a copy of BF2 and got the following

BF2, Medium Detail, 800x600, 16vs16
Minimum= 11
Maximum= 54
Average= 25.3 FPS

I guess that can be expected, but i'm stumped as to why the older games don't run much faster, but its obvious there is CPU bottlenecking taking place.

In terms of upgrade paths I have been told to look at a low end Pentium D but their price to performance ratio doesnt really impress me, So I believe my money would be better spent on an AMD 939 CPU/Mobo combo, to last me until around mid-next year.

Thoughts?

We really need all the system Info to really help you..... MOBO BIOS HD's Drivers Etc....

Without that...... anything that they come up with ends up being a rectal extraction...

it ends up being the Clueless leading the poor guy that needs help....

Ok I extracted this from Sandra 2007

System BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 8.12
Mainboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5V800-MX
Hard Disk: WDC WD800BB-55JKC0 (75GB)
DirectX 9.0c
ATi Catalyst 6.5

I think that covers it :)

Thank You !!

That MOBO is part of the issue... It is a VIA chipset ... they are not a good choice
Make sure that you put the latest Hyperion IDE SATA & 4 in 1 drivers in for that Chipset.

http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1070

But you are being held back by your Hard Drive... That WD BB is a 2 MB Cache... The Board is capeable of SATA... I would reccomend someting with a 16 MB Cache.

You Should also Update Your BIOS the File Is Here : http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P5V800-MX

Run it with the ASUS Updater in Windows... it is new and should help.....

Last but not Least, Vid Card Drivers : https://support.ati.com/ics/support/def...?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27

At least now you will be updated ... with that VIA chipset etc.

The issue that you are running into is that you cannot feed the processor and sub-systems fast enough and as the drive accesses and uses page file it drags you down....

You can buy a SATA 160 Gig w/16 MB Cache for $ 65.00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822136062

Let me know what you come up with, and I might have another Tweak that might help you until you update that drive....
